“A topclass boutique hotel....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012 via mobile

We have just checked in to balmoral hotel for our wedding anniversary. There have kindly upgraded us to the suite room and all we can say is WOW!!! From the kind helpful staff to Molton brown products and not forgetting the best hotel suite we have ever stayed in. We always stay in 5* hotels but have never stayed in one like this. For that special occasion or just a treat away this is the hotel to stay at.. Mark and Jen

This was my first visit to the Balmoral and my partner and I found the staff to be most helpful and genuinely happy to help. There is parking provided and Harrogate is a short walk away. Breakfast was efficient and the quality was very good. However, although clean the rooms were tired and in need of a refurb or at least a refresh. The bath was tiny! As some reviews have mentioned, the bar area is a let down, it isn't well stocked and the whole place lacks any kind of an atmosphere. Overall the place has a huge potential but it needs some TLC. Staff do their best but this is not 4 star quality, a very nice three star seems more accurate.

First impressions really count and this hotel certainly shines, with its chic victorian design and lovely bar/reception area. But sadly on closer inspection this is not the case, it is very tired indeed. The rooms are shabby chic with more emphasis on the shabby side, we stayed in room 4 with it's very unusal bathroom door....saloon style swing door which offers no privacy whatsoever. The room is also directly above the bar, which albeit is not busy, but the bass from the music penentrates straight up to the room and is very annoying especially when it comes to bed time. Oh and the room is pretty small too, but very clean. Plus points for this hotel, the staff, they are wonderful and truely helpful. The breakfast was nice with a good selection of pastries and cereals with the option of a cooked full english which comes in the perfect portion size. Also the molton brown bathroom products are a treat along with the taylors tea selection. We stayed 3 nights costing us £277 for bed and breakfast, which would have been ok if the room was slightly bigger. We wouldn't stay here again, which is such a shame as the hotel has soooo much potential! However, we would come back if we heard news that it had been freshened up and if the restaurant was reinstated as it is a bit of a disappointment that the balmoral no longer has a restaurant as it has the perfect space for intimate dining and the bar has a very limited stock. We visited The White Hart hotel for one meal on the recommendation of the staff as they offered a free taxi service to and from (the balmorals sister). The White Hart was nice and once again the staff were great. So all in all a middle of the road review for The Balmoral....

Room Tip: Don't take room 4 if offered as it is very small, is right above the bar so noise is a real issu...

We have stayed here as 2 or 4 people three or four times over the last few months, and have always found it to be a lovely stay, despite some of the rooms being a little tired. The service is excellent, the breakfast is always good and we like the fact it's cooked to order and not a dried up buffet.
The night bar man is always attentive, it's just a shame that quite often there isn't a better selection of drinks as things like tequila (my favourite drink) are often not in stock and a better selection of drinks may well entice more people to drink in the bar.

This is our second visit to the Balmoral. The first was a year ago - we had a lovely mini suite, there was a good restaurant, a lively vibe and waiter service in the garden - good for a G&T in the sun.
This time however....they tried to put us in a shoebox "minisuite" on the ground floor...it was depressing. We asked if there was an alternative and were given one. Then we realised there is no longer a restaurant, and the lovely bar was like a ghost town....noone working on it, noone drinking there.
What a shame! Talk about wasted potential. We decided to skip breakfast this time :(

Room Tip: Avoid the ground floor

Just came back from a 1 night stay in The Balmoral and was disappointed overall,,, 1st impressions are quite good but dont be fooled its all a front. Rooms are dated and shabby and very dusty. The bar had no stock, the breakfast was swimming in grease for the cooked breackfast althought the toast and jam was nice !!! Dont recommend staying here if you think you are going to get a 4* hotel because in my opinion its does not come up to scratch. Very expensive for what you get.....

I have just been on a girlie weekend to Harrogate and have stayed at The Balmoral Hotel. We booked the 'Here Comes the Girls' package. What a great offer and excellent value for money. Good location not too far from town, very helpful staff, lovely rooms, use of a nice Health Spa and the meal at The White Hart (sister hotel) was fabulous. Thank you we all thoroughly enjoyed our weekend away.
