“Big old hotel with comfort and character”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2009

O.k. so some of the paintwork needing sprucing up a bit and the general decor could do with a bit of renovation, but all in all we had an enjoyable stay at this hotel.
The reception area and lounge were really comfortable with lots of big couches and a chap playing the piano.
The room we stayed in was spacious clean and comfortable with a huge bathroom, a powerful shower and hot water a plenty.
The staff were courtious and attentive and the location couldn't be better for the centre of Harrogate with all the shops and restaurants being less than a five minute walk away.
The leisure centre is modern and well equipped with a nice pool, steam rooms and jaccuzzi all very clean and well maintained.
The keyword for this hotel is comfort and that's what we got.
I've paid a lot more for a lot less, and next time we visit Harrogate I would seriously consider staying here again.

Expecting this hotel to be very mediocre we were pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness and quality of the furnishings. The staff were pleasant and friendly and the breakfast excellent. Considering that this is a town centre hotel it was amazingly quiet as it is set well back from the main road. Would definitely reccommend.

This Hotel should be great, it’s quirky, quaint and central. Sadly when I stayed there for 3 nights the hot water varied between tepid and luke warm! I was repeatedly promised that the boiler would be fixed, sadly it didn’t happen during my stay. In my room there was a large damps spot on one of the walls and other colleagues reported the same problems in their rooms. If you do decide to stay at this hotel keep well clear of the rooms overlooking the car park. The bin men arrive sharp at 5am and proceed to loudly hurl rubbish into the cart with a noise that would awake the dead, let alone the tired conference attendee! No sooner have you nodded off than the traders and white van men turn up with supplies and provision to make sure you don’t awake late.... no need for an early morning wakeup call here! I had to phone down for bath towels and shower gel as both had not been left in the room. The Wi-Fi only worked for 1 of my 3 days stay and the staff seemed unable to do anything about this problem either. On the plus side the staff were helpful and constantly apologised for the hotels short comings. The breakfasts were first class and the evening meal we had was also good for the price. The tiny lift seemed to a live a life of its own and to be truthful some areas were quite tired. In short this is a faded star and unworthy of its 3 star rating and price tag...sorry.

This rates as one of the poorest hotels I've stayed in. The owners have let it become tired and worn out, and have clearly not spent any money on upgrading, or maintaining it. NO hot water, small poorly furnished room in need of a complete makeover, air conditioning units outside my window humming all night, 2.5" gap under the door. TV not working correctly, stingy on tea bags and biscuits, etc.......I could go on! You've been warned.

The staff were polite and friendly. The hotel, a once grand place but now needs refurbishing, which does appear to have started. The room was comfortable and warm, the bathroom an experience. The shower switched from boiling hot to freezing cold just as you thought you'd got the temperature right, good if you like to play 'shower roulette'! When the bath was used in the room next door, the water came up through our plug hole - so had to remember to leave the plug in. Hopefully the plumbing is on the list of jobs for modernisation. Nice leisure facilities - a lovely warm swimming pool. Food was extremely good and waiters/waitresses polite, friendly and efficient. We would stay here again.

Having first booked this hotel, and then looked at the reviews, I was in a state of panick by the time I arrived. This was a planned break for my elderly mother, and I wanted it to be a pleasant stay! Despite all the reviews, on arrival, we found the staff to be extremely helpful, kind and considerate! The rooms ( we stayed on the 2nd floor) were small, but very clean and comfortable, with crisp white linnen and lovely fluffy white towels, the beds were very comfortable, with lovely matress toppers, the curtains were nice and heavy to keep out the early morning sun. Bathrooms were VERY clean and scrubbed, nice toiletried were provided. Yes the hotel is in need of a bit of decor renovation, but on the whole it is a lovely hotel. We paid £58 per night for a double room and £35 for the single room. But for this you also get full use of the gym, steam room, sauna and pool. The Turkish baths are just accross the road and the hotel is in walking distance of everything in the centre of Harrogate!
Breakfast can be bought at whetherspoons just accros the road for £2.60 for full english!
Although we didnt eat in the hotel, we were told the food was great!
Come on folks...............what do you want for your money!
I travel extensively, I have stayed in amny hotels, not half as good as this one!
We are planning a return trip

This was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. The bedroom had lovely views of the fire escape. the bed must have been used by a herd of elephants as a trampoline, peeling wallpaper, unkempt, lightshades hanging off fittings. Could not find tea/coffee making facilities initially (then found out they hide them in the drawer). Blankets on bed im sure were recycled from the harrogate ambulance service. Deciding to have a bath after a long journey I quickly jumped out as had hairs off previous guests in. Shower was a disgrace stretched and hanging off ranged from freezing cold to scalding hot without warning and had the pressure of the yorkshire fire service hoses! Decided to have a drink in bar downstairs shabby decor, dirty throws on worn out sofas, 1980'2 decor no music/tv. Bar staff really was not enjoying her job. European staff although pleasant enough looked tired and fed up! Food ok for bar snacks. Had to use lift due to heavy bag but had to squeeze in as tiny. Noise from club next door until early hours which in fairness was mentioned when booking. No good for young people (us!) generally the older generation we felt as if in saga magazine. Generally really bad, good location but how it passed its inspection i realy dont know. Wheres the hotel inspector get her in to sort them out!!!!!
