“Really pleasant hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

Stayed for 3 nights and have to say the staff were great, the location superb and the room was grand.
The cooked breakfast was 'order and served' with self service cereals, continental trimmings, juices and bread.
The breakfast staff were efficient & attentive.
The Guinness in the bar was a first for me - special cans placed on a vibrating plate to create a draught beer effect? Actually worked.
Would recommend this hotel.
Outside my usual gripe of expensive WiFi ( a couple of hundred yards from the brilliant free Wetherspoons service !!) my only one complaint was the seize and height of the bathroom sink - barely functional.

Room Tip: Agatha room is immense

Just spent 5 days at this lovely hotel. Building, rooms and décor all very nice. Towels changed daily, and sheets changed during my stay. Staff are all very attentive and friendly, could not be more helpful. The reason for only 4 stars is that food and wine are not quite up to scratch e.g: veggies hot but not cooked (I think the chef is aiming for 'al dente' but achieves raw), taste also lacking; although beautifully presented. Wine (purchased by the glass) tasted like that served in a down market pub, this was a surprise and I was unable to drink much of it. The location is great, plenty of car parking. I would happily stay again, for bed and breakfast only.

We arrived on Sunday 14th April looking forward to Afternoon tea.

We were told to go into this room and just take a seat!
Suffice to say "This room" resembled a TV room for OAP's

We waited for some time and no one came to us, So I went to the bar and advised we were here for Afternoon tea, and where we were sat.
I was hoping that the tea stained table cloth that was already on the table would be replaced with a fresh one! Suffice to say it was not!

The champagne that was served up (If it was champage) was not good. The first glasses were sent back as it was flat. I would have hoped they would have poured from a fresh bottle, the 2nd set of glasses were also flat. The best way to describe the taste is flat Appletise. YUK

The Sandwiches were OK and Scones and cakes mostly OK, Victoria sponge a bit dry!
Best part was the TEA, which was good!

Whilst trying to enjoy the music in the background, a large group decided they wanted to watch the TV full blast! totally ruining what little atmosphere there was.

Even when the mangement tried to turn it down, they were nearly lynched by the group.
Management did offer to move us to a different room, but as we had nearly finished, it was not worth it, and we just wanted to get out!

So to sum up.
We wont be returning, and The Old Swan needs to seriously look at the venue for the Afternoon teas, as the TV room/Bar area is not the place for them!!

Stayed at this hotel recently as part of a tour group. The hotel has an ideal location, only a couple of minutes walk from the town centre and has plenty of car parking. We were disappointed to be allocated a small room, with a very small bed and no view, but it was clean and for all the time that we spent in it, was adequate. We were provided with breakfast and dinner and the food was really nice, the only thing that let it down was the breakfast on the Sunday morning - there was a wedding party in from the previous night so it was buffet - had to wait for hot plates to be brought out and then a further wait for the food to be replenished, by which time the plates were cold.....................

The staff were all very friendly, polite and helpful

On the positive side; this hotel is in a great situation, just a couple of minutes walk from the centre of Harrogate. It has plenty of parking unlike other hotels in Harrogate, where parking can be at a premium. The gardens and front of the hotel is lovely and the downstairs reception area has a warming open fire. The staff were helpful and friendly. We only had breakfast there, which was fine.

The negatives; our double room wasn't exactly large. As our room looked out on to an opposite wall, the view wasn't anything to write home about (tip ask for a room with a view over the front). The lift broke down when we were there, not a problem for us but I did hear a few of the guests who were nervous that they might not manage the stairs. For £99.00 for the night for just bed and breakfast, I would have thought this wouldn't be he best deal for a Saturday night stay in Harrogate.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a decent view.

Agatha Christie famously stayed here and it looks like it hasn't been updated since. Shabby carpets, dirty chairs in the dining room and a dirty flannel left in our bathroom when we checked in. The bed while comfortable was too short for anyone over 6ft tall and your feet would easily stick out. Despite having 6 waiters at breakfast on Sunday morning we had to queue 10 minutes to be seated as they were too slow clearing away dirty tables. Only positives are the central location and plenty of free parking. In summary I hope the local police solve the mystery of the murdered vacuum cleaner.

Room Tip: Ask for the top floor as we noticed the floors were creaky and glad we weren't on a lower floor.

The Old Swan is a lovely hotel located in central Harrogate. Oozing with period charm, the Old Swan provides comfortable accomodation in a historic setting. We stayed for a Murder Mystery package which included a delicious three course meal, however the murder mystery was far cheesier than the cheese board!
