“Good and bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

This is a really old coaching inn, now a hotel. Sadly, this beautiful old building is looking tired from the outside with window paint peeling.
On a positive, the staff are second to none for friendliness and attention.
The rooms are big but again the whole place could do with a facelift.
Food is good but the small portions are seriously overpriced as are the drinks at the bar.

We called here just for an evening meal on the way back home from London on 1/9/13. The restaurant was shut (I suppose that should have sounded warning bells!) but we were told that a menu was available in the lounge. For a soggy battered fish, peas and a few hand cut chips together with a just acceptable piece of salmon with potatoes & hollandaise the cost was over £33. The waiter service, although efficient, was curt and unfriendly (but in contrast, the reception staff were helpful and courteous). Had we not both been weary and keen to get home I would normally have complained to the manager. As it is, I'll not be visiting the Haycock again. A great shame because we visited this lovely old hotel many years ago one lunchtime and we were presented with a fabulous help yourself cold buffet at a very reasonable price.

Just returned from 1 night stay, excellent service, beautiful location will definitely return for another visit. It had an idyllic atmosphere and was perfect for the occasion. The views were infallible. Generally, a very pleasing stay at the Haycock Hotel in Peterborough.

...I say 'surprisingly' because we were there for a wedding reception and hotel food at such events tends to be 'standard', or 'good' at best. This was great.

I had the lamb shank. Plenty of it and really succulent. In fact all the courses were good and the master of ceremonies was both unobtrusive and careful not to miss anything.

If the restaurant and hotel are as good as their weddings, this is highly recommended.

Popped in for a quick late lunch. Good bar menu although a little expensive. Food quality was good. We had our dog with us and as we were eating outside he was made welcome and offered a bowl of water, which was much appreciated. Bar staff lacked "personality" but the waiter was excellent.

Visited The Haycock on several occasions when privately owned and it was always first calss. It is now a MacDonald hotel and it has completely gone down hill. Complete lack of character when first entering the building, nobody on reception, nobody around. We had to search for someone to book in for our dinner reservation.

Food was extremely expensive for the small portions received. I left after the meal feeling still rather peckish -- not good!

We will not be returning.

We stopped off from a river nene canal trip. Food was ok although very expensive. Service indifferent and it felt they were trainees. More attention needs to be given on service and value for money. It's a nice venue however I just think they need to put the customer hat on.
