“Great value, comfortable rooms!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2013

This is a great value hotel that offers more than the basic comforts at a nice reasonable price. Stayed for one night, rooms are very big including the bed. Friendly staff and quiet rooms.

It was so nice, we've re-booked for a date in a weeks time when we're back in the area.

Room Tip: Back of the hotel is away from the road however all rooms are generally quiet

Things were promising when we first arrived, car parking space, friendly welcome and on the doorstop of town centre. Nice big, clean room with a good TV, comfy bed and big shower.

However, people book hotels for a nights sleep... This is where is all went wrong.

When we returned later in the afternoon, we fancied a drink at the bar, to be told It was closed to residents, and we were directed into a "pop up bar" in a corridor shaped room, with a limited supply of drinks, no music and no TV. so we decided to take drinks to our room to get at least some atmosphere. Also, although free wifi is advertised everywhere, neither of us could actually sign in, and on enquiry at reception, we were told it was down.

We left about half 7pm and it was apparent there was an Xmas party in the reception/bar/restaurant area, which clearly isn't designed for functions, it's obviously a money spinner on the side for the hotel, with no regard at all for those paying to stay in the hotel.
On return at around 11.30pn, party is still in full swing, bouncer on the door, can't hear yourself think in reception, all residents of hotel crammed in the fake bar, with 1 barman and 2 taps. We waited over ten minutes to get 2 drinks for bed. As it turned out, our room was directly above the party. Thumping through the floor, we decided we'd leave it til midnight before complaining. We called at midnight and asked what time it stopped, to be told they didn't know. 20 mins later, we called again, no one answered, if imagine they couldn't hear the phone over the music.
So in pyjamas, at 12.30am, we had to go downstairs, and complain. The receptionist couldn't even hear what was wrong! We were eventually given a new room, an "upgrade" so moved rooms at 12.45am, into a "business" room that was smaller and absolutely no different to what we had before, other than half the size and with a dressing gown and slippers on the bed. (I noticed on reception a sign charging £20 for upgrades to business!)
All in all, a most disappointing night.
No peace, no bar and no wifi.

Thank you for your review.
Firstly please let me apologise for the inconveniences during your stay, this was not my intention.
The restaurant and bar located in the hotel is also open to the general public, as well as the hotel guests. From the end of November and the month of December we hold Christmas parties at the hotel. This information was passed on to all booking Websites, Laterooms included, that the bar and restaurant is actually fully booked. And the only food available is through room service. We had the same practice last year which worked well. I have asked our Revenue Manager to investigate with booking websites where it is displayed for guests wishing to book with us.

The room you are referring to as the bar and restaurant, is in fact the function room. This can be used at a number of different sizes. The walls can be moved and we didn't want to remove all the walls and have it all open as this would also take away the atmosphere. This is the room that is also used for parties. Whilst all products may not have been on display at the other bar, all would have still been available on request.

The room you moved into is in fact the same size as your previous room. Breakfast is also included in business class rooms (£24.95), as well as a quiet location, bathrobe, slippers and a complimentary newspaper (if requested). You should have been told this during your room move, and after speaking with the night receptionist, he just wanted to move you into another room ASAP as he could understand your frustration, which was why he did not explain the extra benefits.

To reiterate, what I said in my other email, this is not our normal level of service and I hope you will give us the opportunity to redeem ourselves.

Beautifully refurbished, this hotel is in a perfect location for shops & sights of Peterborough, for instance close to cathedral. Plenty of restaurants nearby & train & bus station only minutes walk away. We were upgraded to a family room which was huge! Also had breakfast included for a nominal charge. Staff were all very pleasant & helpful. Only slight criticism, as someone else commented, toilet paper is of the poorest quality. Also found our bathroom to be chilly. But we would return again & again.

Room Tip: Although this hotel is close to main road, traffic noise was minimal, our room was at front too!!

Stayed here for 2 weeks early November
Good points...rooms are nice and modern, Breakfast very good and breakfast staff friendly, evening food very good sometimes.
Bad points...45 minutes wait between starter and main in near empty restaurant simply not good enough, if it wasn't for the fact meals were paid for by my company we would've walked out on at least four occasions.
Ordered the same starter on 2 different nights (Thai Beef Salad) one night it was as described, second time it was like a beef curry!. Chef or Chefs need looking at.

Also the toilet rolls in the rooms could be of better quality, they are like the ones you'd expect from a pound shop.
As stated this could be a top end 3 star establishment with a few tweaks here and there

Would I stay here again? Yes

Would I recommend the restaurant for a meal? No

Dear AndyH,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We apologize for the dissatisfaction of your stay. We take the time to listen to your constructive comments so we can continually improve our services. Due to our client mix we sometimes find that althought the restaurant is quiet the kitchen can still be busy from the large amount of room service orders we cater for. the chef has also carried out some training sessions with his team to ensure a high level of consistency.
We hope for another opportunity to exceed your expectations. Please reach out to any of our employees directly should you have any concerns during or after your next stay.

Kind regards,

We stayed here for a night in August as part of a weekend trip to the area. We'd got the room at a very reasonable rate, including breakfast. There was also free parking.

From the moment we arrive, the staff were all incredibly helpful and friendly. Everyone, the lady at the front desk, the breakfast staff and the young man who checked us out, were just so helpful and cheerful. We've stayed in many hotels and haven't had such a universally chirpy set of staff anywhere.

The room itself was fine. Perfectly clean, with a comfortable bed. We overlooked the main road at the front of the hotel, but we didn't have any road noise. The bathroom was fine, again clean enough. We didn't eat in the restaurant, so can't comment on that.

The breakfast was excellent for what it was. As I said, the staff were great and very prompt at replenishing the breakfast items. You could order items like poached eggs separately. There was a big enough choice to satisfy most people and given the room rate, this was a very good deal.

The location is ideal, easy enough to get to by road and an easy walk to the city centre and all the attractions.

We've never stayed in this chain before, so have no idea if the Peterborough hotel is typical. We may not return to Peterborough, but this is an excellent hotel of its type and we'd happily stay there again.

The hotel is conveniently located near the station and near the heart of the city. I arrived quite late on a train from London and was happy to find that the hotel was within walking distance. Check in was smooth and efficient, but again I was given a room on the front side of the hotel, facing the road and railway and thus being woken up by noise early in the morning. The room was spacious and clean, the bed was huge and comfortable and again had enough pillows, which I needed as the ones that were there were quite soft so I needed a few to give me support. The bathroom was ok, big enough, but the water barely came out of the showerhead and therefor did not provide me with a satisfactory shower in the mornings. Onwards to the breakfast buffet, I was greeted and seated very friendly and efficiently both mornings but besides the statutory 'coffee or tea' and 'thank you, goodbye' I was totally ignored. Recurring guests were recognised and treated as though it was their second home. The breakfast was exactly what one can expect, greasy, fatty and large. I was filled up very quickly without having eaten much at all, however they do offer a large selection of choices. Again, the coffee was horrible and I had to go out to ensure I got the required dose of cafeine to be able to properly wake up. The staff on reception were friendly and helpfull, but did not stand out and did not really try to go out of their way to help you a step further.
