“Great Pub, Great Food, Great Rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2012

Stayed on Saturday 10th March for one night. it is on the main road but as the night draws on the traffic reduces so noise from the road is not an issue.

The room (Punch & Judy) was large and well appointed with full tea & coffee making facilities which was a nice bonus. Very popular pub but you do get the option of reserving a table as part of the check in should you want a meal. We didn't and arrived back after service had ended but were offered a hot option (turned down in favour of pudding which was lush).

Breakfast full English - perfect start to the day.

Landlady and staff were very friendly and accomodating.

Good place to stay if you need a base for the night, a few miles from Scarborough and not to far from Whitby.

We stayed at the Oakwheel on Sat 18Feb.It is on the main road between Whitby and Scarborough,in a quiet pleasant residential area. The room was pleasant, nicely furnished, with a large comfortable double bed, with a very large bathroom with full size bath. The room was nicely heated as was a cold weekend. The landlady and bar staff were friendly and helpful. We ate in the pub that night and the landlady reserved us a table by the open log fire,The pub was full that night with everybody eating. They had to turn people away by 8pm.All the food is homecooked and of a good standard and plebtiful.Breakfast was also nice

A gem of a pub/hotel/restaurant.
Situated in a quiet village.
The welcome was warm, the room spotless and the bar food/meals were excellent and reasonably priced - most definitely 'Yorkshire sized portions!'
Breakfast set you up for the day, and the staff were very friendly.
We will be returning to stay with Wendy and her staff again!

I booked a room for one night stay with my fiance in September 2011, upon arrival we were disappointed as the doors were closed at 16:30.............this is the time it says on the internet that the bar opens! On the board outside it stated that the bar opens at 17:00 and check inn at 17:30! As we checked in we were shown to our 'Punch & Judy' room........I asked the lady if it was the superior room as I booked via the telephone and she said no it isn't but there is not much difference and then she walked away.........I was quite annoyed as my fiance is 6ft 8 and needs at least a king size bed!! We didn't mention it just put up with the double room.........on the invoice they had charged us for the double too. That same evening we had our dinner in The Oakwheel........the portions were very generous however, later that evening we both had upset stomachs!! The breakfast was nice but portions were noticeably less generous than the evening meals (which were paid for separately) and you only get one measly sausage............Lastly, if you chose the 'Punch and Judy' room beware of the noise all night from the cooling system from the beer cellar.

I was reluctant to post a bad review on trip advisor however, everyone of my complaints were mentioned to staff during the stay and the best reply they could offer was 'Oh Dear.' They did nothing about our room other than apologise on our way out saying someone had booked our room on line and there had been a mix up!!!

Room Tip: You can not guarantee staying in the room that you have booked!

We stayed in one off the double rooms which was clean and welcoming with a large bathroom including a shower over the bath. Beautiful bedding and towels and a flat screen TV. The highlight of the stay was however the evening meal and breakfast, a table must be booked as when we went down to the bar at around 6 oclock the place was heaving. The menu is not extensive but what you get is freshly cooked, hot and excellent value for money, the same goes for breakfast which again was excellent. We will be returning in the not too distant future
