“First Impressions deceiving”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2007

On arrival was dissapointed as from the outside it looks like a guest house with an extension out the back. Reception area quite old fashioned and dated but the receptionist was so friendly and I then realised this was a homely friendly family run hotel not the run of the mill chain hotel. Standard room on first floor in the orginal old building was a bit dated with a view of extractor fans from the kitchen area. De-luxe rooms are in the new section and would reccommend the extra cost. Leisure centre excellent, very clean and well run. Footprints restaurant provided a relaxing romantic meal that could not be faulted but the high-light has to be the best cooked to order breakfast. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Very relaxing atmosphere, great value and close to Wexford town. Will be returning but to a deluxe room.

i stayed here with work for three night in may 2007. i chose it because it had sounded good. when i first seen it i was bit disappointed. it looks like an enormous bed and breakfast that has grown over the years. as it is family run it has a few quirks that you would not expect from a chain of hotels but nothing out of the ordinary. the food in the bar was really quite good and i suppose it had to be as the restaurant does not open till seven o'clock at night. i would probably stay here again as there is a real lack of hotels in the wexford area.

  • Liked — the fact i had a superior room
  • Disliked — late opening times of the restaurant and no buffet breakfast.

We stayed here for a couple of nights last week, admittedly i wouldnt normally stay in a three star property, but as it had the best reviews in Wexford, we decided upon here. Check in was swift and friendly, which was good start. Our room was a good size and clean, but nothing spectacular. The furniture had seen better days, I opened one of the cupboard doors and the handle came off in my hand. The bathroom was a good size but the fittings were cheap, old and out dated and the shower dripped constantly day and night. But what really turned our stay sour for me was that our room backed onto the vents for the restaurant, so if we opened our window or balcony door, we were met with an overwhelming smell of deep fat frying, which really turned my stomache. Therefore my husband and i had to endure sweltering room tempertures (no air con) or risk feeling constantly nauseous.
On a better note the leisure facilities were excellent, well staffed and cared for and i enjoyed a facial at the spa that just could not be faulted.

  • Liked — Good sized room and bathroom
  • Disliked — Nauseating smells from the kitchen. Location a little way out of town.

We have stayed in this hotel quite a few times now, having found it by accident. We had planned to stay in the Quality Hotel up the road, but as a result of being met by a rude and grumpy receptionist, decided not to bother. The Whitford is a brilliant place to stay, and what makes it so are a. the staff, who cannot do enough for you and b. the food, which is outstanding. The food in the restaurant is remarkable, the steak is the best I've tasted anywhere and the desserts divine. We also had a lunch in the bar one day and the standard was equally as good. The staff are really friendly and the rooms are great - really good value for money.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2007

My husband and I spent two nights at this wonderful hotel recently. From the minute we arrived we were made feel at home. The reception staff were fantastic. We booked a superior deluxe room and it was just lovely - very big, impecably clean and it had a little patio area attached also. The bar is so warm and friendly. We ate there twice and the food was fabulous on both occassions (huge portions). We also ate in the beautiful restaurant for breakfast (freshly cooked to order - was gorgeous! The only complaint I have is that the fruit salad seved at breakfast was tasteless...) and also for an evening meal. The ambiance in the restaurant was so romantic and the food was out of this world. We also spent time in very clean leisure centre and I had the best massage I've ever had in the treatment rooms. But the one thing in my opinion that puts this hotel above the others (and I've stayed in many hotels around the world) is its staff. They are outstanding, always ready with a hello and a smile and nothing is too much for them. Congratulations to the Whitty family on a fantastic hotel. We will definitely be returning again and again.

We stayed in this hotel at the beginning of November 2005 and it was an excellent all-round experience. We upgraded to a superior deluxe room which had a 6 foot bed, a huge bathroom, a balcony and loads of room. The food in both the restaurant and the bar was really good and both were really busy on the 3 nights that we were there! They have musical entertainment on 3 or 4 nights a week and it was great to see the locals doing their set-dancing on Friday night.

The management and staff were really friendly and helpful and the pool and leisure centre were lovely (the pool temperature was a bit hot for me, but that's my personal preferrence - my husband loved it!).

The hotel was spotless and the cleaners were friendly and very efficient.

I'd definitely recommend the hotel either to a couple who want a bit of craic or to a family who are looking for somewhere to bring the kids!

We stay at Whitford at least 4/5 times per year. We love it!

The hotel started off in the house of Kathleen Radford and Jim Whitty (has sadly passed away) and has developed into a hotel in it's own right, with it's own conference rooms, leisure centre etc. (Whitty & Radford=the name of Whitford)

It is still owned and run by Kathleen Whitty. She is not hands-on, but can be seen eating in the bar most weekends. Her sons/daughters and family are management there.

The hotel is classed as 3star, however, as I travel quite a bit for leisure, I would class it as 4 star.

BAR
It has a newly renovated bar, which serves carvery and bar food. The food is second to none.

RESTAURANT
Footprints Restaurant serves lovely food. It has much coveted AA Rosettes. The presentation of each dish is also superb. I simply have not tasted a better steak! No request is too much. Liam (maitre'd) is fantastic at his job and all the staff are so helpful and friendly.

LESIURE CLUB
Whitford has a recently built deck swimming pool, also with gym and treatment rooms. Lovely lesiure club only open to club members and guests at the hotel.

ROOMS
Standard rooms are basic, but comfortable.
For an extra €25 per room per night, it is well worth upgrading to a superior deluxe room. It will mean being housed in a newer wing of the hotel, with a huge bed, much larger room and a balcony/patio.

ROOM SERVICE
Room service is great. We always order our breakfast to the room and it is delivered at the exact time specified! Ok, so it costs extra, but it's well worth it.(especially if you have a superior deluxe room, with 2 armchairs and a table)

LOCATION
It is located on a roundabout on the main Dublin-Rosslare road. It is 15mins walk from Wexford, you can drive it in about 5 mins. Takes about 20 mins to drive to Rosslare beach.

SUMMARY
We have enjoyed every stay at Whitford and have never, ever had any reason to complain over anything-not even anything small! Absolutely faultless!
