“Comfortable and friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

We only stayed 2 nights here but would have liked to stay longer if we had time. About a mile out of Waterford it was extremely comfortable, a good size room, good beds, powerful shower and large soft towels. Lovely gardens and pleasant communal rooms. All the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, taking time to get to know you and put you at your ease. The food in Zacs restaurant is delicious with lots of choice, local and fresh. Don't miss the chocolate pot if it's on! All in all a great place to stay.

Came here for a meal after a recent funeral. The parking situation left a lot to be desired as the available car park spaces were hopelessly outnumbered by the cars looking to park. As it was I had to park a distance away and walk through puddles on a raining afternoon. The staff seemed ill prepared for such a large group as the one I was in and found it difficult to make tea and coffee for the numbers wanting them. The food however was really beautiful, my fish was beautifully cooked and the accompanying vegetables were perfect, note: vegetable portions could have been a little bigger. The staff however seemed to ignore requests to have used plates/cutlery removed from the table. I had to take them from the table myself and eventually a staff member took them from me. The disappointing service can be improved upon but the food certainly does not need improving. Please note I am only reviewing the restaurant and not the bedrooms.

Had a great stay here, and the breakfast was superb for our morning! The room was very nice, and spacious. We enjoyed a nice night of sleep in the king sized bed and the view from our room was amazing as it looked over the back garden and the river. Bathroom was spacious and clean! Definitely would use again for a trip to Ireland, as the history of Waterford is really interesting!

We had a lovely stay at the Athenaeum. The best thing was that every single member of the staff was so helpful and friendly. The receptionists always gave a cheery greeting as you go past and have lots of suggestions for things to do, and Michelle who looks after breakfast was a star.

Our room on the ground floor was very spacious, clean and quiet. Yes, perhaps a little dated, but that just adds to the country house feel. Tip, the rooms at the back of the hotel overlook the lawn with views of the River Suir through the trees. Much nicer I think than the front, which looks onto the car park.

Breakfast was very nice, and cooked to order which is much, much better than the hot buffet at many hotels.

The hotel is across the river from Waterford City, around 7 or 8 minutes drive. I don't think many would walk as, once you leave the hotel grounds, it's along an fairly unattractive main road.

Overall, a strong recommendation and we won't hesitate to stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the lawn at the rear

I stayed here for 2 nights over the Easter holiday with my family, The hotel is located on the opposite bank of the river, so the view of Waterford is very nice, but it was quite tricky to find and you do wonder where on earth you are going. To get into the city itself is a 10 minute drive.
We were given 2 adjacent rooms. The king size bed were 2 singles pushed together. The rooms that we had were very dark. The (dark) bedspread had a nasty stain on it when turned back, I hope it was a tea stain. The (dark) curtains were fraying at the edges which just looked shabby. Because we were on the ground floor overlooking the car park we had to keep the curtains drawn most of the time and so the room had a slightly oppressive feel to it. A window covering of some kind would have been nice. The TV was the tiniest you have ever seen - mounted in the middle of quite a large wall.
The bathroom was adequate but nothing special. The towels on arrival were frayed which surprised us, and climbing into the bath to take a shower meant that you were hit by the damp shower curtain as it was a tight squeeze to stand next to the grab rail on the wall. The grouting was dirty and lifted.
We had a breakfast buffet and an evening meal on one night. The food was nice, however my desert was let down by being served on a plate covered in potato starch. This combined with dead flowers on the tables let the evening down.
All in all we had an OK stay - the hotel is trying to be a boutique hotel, but is let down badly by the lack of attention to detail that could make it a special place.
We didn't encounter any of the outstanding staff mentioned in other reviews, in fact I think we only met 3 or 4 staff during our entire stay, but maybe they were off.
If you want a nice meal and a room afterwards then this is a pleasant place to stay. For our needs and expectations we would have been better booking a hotel in the city itself offering more facilities.

Dear Barbados Millie

I gave a full reply to your review last week, in which you mentioned we over looked the City of Cork, at the time I explained that we overlooked Waterford not Cork, I note you have taken down that review, slightly changed it and posted a second time.

This was our 3rd stay at the hotel. That would tell you that overall, we like it.
The staff are always helpful and the food in the restaurant is really very good. The last time we stayed somewhere else in Waterford, we actually ate at Zaks that night too!
It's a little bit out of the way regarding the city but has great views and is quiet and calm up the driveway to the hotel.
I agree with other reviewers that the rooms are very dated. I have only ever been given a room on the ground floor so cannot comment on the others. Typically these have 2 double beds pushed together and the smallest TV known to man! However they are clean and we always sleep well.
I heard that the rooms were being upgraded some time ago but this does not seem to have started (?)
The reason why we keep coming back is because of Zaks. The menu gives ample choice, ingredients are first class and staff do a great job of explaining and recommending if you need help. The wine list really compliments the menu and there is a solid selection for all tastes and budgets.
There is a cozy bar area next to the restaurant which is great for relaxing after dinner with a drink. We often see large groups and families having dinner here and there is a friendly atmosphere.
We were delighted to see that the restaurant won an award recently as it is well deserved.
Breakfast is served in the restaurant. Again there is a good choice and we always have a hearty start to the day before heading back to Cork.
It's the room that stops me giving it 5 stars!

Stayed in this beautiful boutique hotel just 5 minutes outside of Waterford last week. My wife and my 2 year old son had a fantastic 2 days (Monday & Tuesday). Our room was spacious and cosy with gorgeous views across the river into the city.
Stan and his staff were amazing and made us so welcome, taking time to chat to us and my little boy! Food in Zak's restaurant was gorgeous!
Definitely will return again !!
