Stayed here on a dinner, bed and breakfast break which , priced at 110 euro, seemed too good to be true. It was.
Arrived a little early and decided to have lunch, 2 omelettes, fries , salads, bottle of wine, well cooked food and great service. Good value also.
Went to check into our room, stayed on the second floor, stepping into the lift was like standing in an oven, the build up of heat throughout the hotel was incredible.
Got into the room and again the heat was stifling, no air conditioning and sun beaming in the window. opened the windows wide and the bathroom window but to little avail.
The room itself was in need of a major overhaul, sagging beds, tiny television and crying out for a deep clean. In fact the rest of the hotel , with the exception of the library area and corridors needed some sprucing up.
Headed into Waterford for a couple of hours and returned for dinner.
Our dinner had its highs and lows, mushroom soup totally lacked seasoning, gravadlax of Trout with rhubarb was excellent , We both had the Fish special, described by the owner as Pan fried Hake with a fennel risotto and choriso dressing. My hake was perfectly cooked , my wife's was grossly overcooked, , there was no risotto, just some shaved fennel and courgette and and a pile of sliced choriso and peppercorns sitting in a pool of choriso oil.Side dish of potatoes and vegetables were luke warm.
I had cheese which was excellent ,nice selection served at the correct temperature and my wife had ice cream which was fine.Very mixed experience overall but at no time were we asked if we were enjoying it.
Throughout all this we had a Fawlty tower experience with the owner over our wine which went something like this.
Me- Can I have a bottle of the Riesling please
Him- arrives with Riesling , offers me a taste , and when I notice that it is not the wine that is listed he says, oh yes, we have run out of that one but this is a more expensive one that I will do for the same price.
Me- No problem , very nice thanks.
At this stage he notices a smear on my wife's wine glass and replaces it with a flourish, the one he replaces it with has a big chunk missing from the base which he doesn't notice.
Fast forward to about half way through our main course and we decided to order another bottle of Riesling.
The waitress apologized that they don't have the same wine but they have another Riesling, which turns out to be the one I initially ordered !!!!
She says that it's not that chilled but she will put it in a big ice bucket instead of a cooler to chill it quicker.
Grand says I.
A couple of minutes later the owner appears , picks up the wine from the bucket and says , "That's not chilled enough for you, hang on a minute".
He reappears 2 minutes later with a chilled bottle and starts giving out about the waitress for serving us a bottle that wasn't chilled enough.
We spent the rest of the evening looking for Manuel......
Anyway, we didn't expect too much for what we were being charged but we did expect to get a nights sleep.
However due to the heat in the rooms and having to close the windows at about 5.am due to a foul smell coming in this proved fruitless and we both had the worst nights sleep we have ever had in any hotel.
I had breakfast in the morning and it was very average.
We made a point of telling the receptionist in the morning that we had a dreadful night's sleep and her reply was " oh I know. it's very hard when the weathers like this" and just brushed it off.
There is really not much about this hotel that I could recommend, I will not be returning and I seriously wonder how this can be graded as a four star property. On our drive home from the hotel I noticed a pumping station, sewage perhaps ,at the end of their driveway which may have been the cause of the smell.....
