“waterford factory tour”

On advise of friends to not miss the very interesting tour of the Waterford factory my sister and I drove all the way from Cong to Waterford the last day of our vacation. Sean Maher was our very informative guide. It definitely was one of the most interesting parts of our trip. You really learn to appreciate the workmanship that goes into each piece of crystal. Our guide, Sean Maher, worked at the factory for over 30 years so he was able to really tell us all about the length of each apprenticeship and all the skill and artistic ability one has to acquire to eventually work on the important pieces. Don't miss this tour with Sean. It's really terrific!

“Even better than I was expecting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

Touring the Waterford crystal factory was high on my list of things to do in Ireland, and I was not disappointed. The tour was fascinating and educational as we were taken on a step-by-step tour of how Waterford crystal is made. This particular factory makes specialty pieces and awards. There were only half a dozen of us in the group so everyone had a good vantage point of each station, and we had time to ask questions. At one point one of the artisans invited my husband and me to come behind his station and watch him work (he was etching patterns into a bowl) as he explained what he was doing. At the end of the tour is the showroom. It was beautiful to peruse, even if we couldn't afford to take any of it home. There is an opportunity to have a photograph taken of yourself with a large piece of crystal and email it to yourself. Highly recommended.

“Waterford crystal Factory tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

We spent two days in Waterford and one of the main reasons for stopping over in Waterford was to visit the Waterford Crystal factory. We found our hotel is only a short walk from the Crystal factory. There are no parking facilities near the factory. We walked to the factory and bought tickets for the factory tour. We were interested in finding the history of the crystal making and the details of the actual manufacturing process. The guide took us through various stages of blowing and cutting crystal objects. One good point was that there was no restriction on taking photographs.

We learned that some of the objects are hand made by master craftsman. Some items need a very high level of precision. They are precision cut using machines. We went through the collection of some priced items. There were items such as major trophies specially crafted to be given to the winners of tournaments. There were also some specially designed items to commemorate special events such as nine eleven. We came out of the tour learning a lot about the Waterford crystals and why they are so special and held in high esteem.

My wife wanted to buy a few items to take with us to Australia. I was not in favour of the idea for two reasons. One is their price. Second is the fact that we had to hand carry them in our hand luggage to make sure they are intact. We talked to a few sales people and went around looking at things. Then one sales lady whose name is Miriam came up to us and offered to help us. Her two daughters are in Australia and she very enthusiastically explained about all the items we were interested in. We ended up buying three items including a crystal lamp with very intricate cuttings. All the items were checked for defects and well packed for us to carry them safely. Miriam also explained how we could claim our tax rebate. She can be an asset to any marketing organization.
If you are in Waterford, visiting this factory and taking the factory tour is well worth.

“Up close and personal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

This was the reason that we went to Waterford on our recent visit to Ireland and we were not disappointed. Seeing the crystal being made and carved "up close and personal" was fantastic. The first part of the tour they were blowing the glass, the second part is the marking area and then you get to the part of the tour where they are actually carving the various pieces of crystal. You're right by the workers while they are doing this. In fact, they handed us a piece that they were working on to hold. Only sad part is that Waterford Crystal went bankrupt a few years ago and is now owned by the Bank of America. Who knew?
