We visited with a group recently and found Basil really informative, intelligent and brilliant with the children as well as adults. His wife was also very helpful and friendly. The house is beautiful and well worth a visit to see an historic gem set in Portlaw, which is little known. We had been promised a visit by The Marquis himself and it was disappointing when neither he nor his wife appeared. Perhaps this element should be kept secret each time and let it be an addition to a visit, rather than a disappointment. The gardens are kept by one person and well done to him! The Shell house is worth a visit, just for the sheer magnitude and excellence of the work carried out. Thank you to everyone concerned, especially Basil! He knew his history!
