“lovely stay ... few minor issues”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 days ago NEW

Stayed at the clarion last weekend two nights. On arrival there was a problem with our reservation which was very promptly sorted out by a very efficient friendly receptionist. Arriving at our room we were very pleasantly surprised by its size it was huge. Room and bathroom were spotless. Bed was beautifully comfortable. Lovely to have a fridge in the room. Have stayed in clarion hotel before and its obviously been freshened up, painted, carpets cleaned. Maid service excellent. Ate in the bar and food was beautiful. Bar dining area could do with brightening up. Had drinks in hotel both nights and bar service was terrible. You could stand at bar all night waiting to be served and three barmen on duty. Also there were tall tables all along one wall but no stools. Cudnt figure that out. Stayed in foyer for drinks. Music in bar sat night was awful. Visited pool twice. First time was fine. Second time was very crowded and terrible odour in changing rooms. Showered in room after. Having said that good leisure centre good and provide lovely fluffy towels. Hotel is very child friendly and overall really enjoyed our stay. Will return.

Room Tip: We had room 4145 which was huge and at front of hotel

My daughter and I stayed on 21st February 15 for one night. Outside of hotel was really nice with all the old stonework. The sitting area just inside entrance looked nice, but was very cold. Reception consisted of three small raised desk areas for check in which was quite slow. Went straight to room after check in and the room was clean but some of the furniture did show quite a lot of wear. The fridge/mini bar did not work and I reported this to one of the receptionist who dismissed this by saying it's not as cold as a fridge. I said it is not working at all and was told she would send someone up, this never happened. I later lifted the kettle to find that it had been left on and the pouring filter had dropped off and was melted to the bottom. This time I got a different receptionist, and immediately a new kettle was brought up to the room. Later that night I turned down the bed to find a big stain on the sheet right in the middle of the bed, and a porter was sent up to give us a new one. We ate in the hotel and the choice was not great, but adequate. The main issue during our stay was the noise coming from other rooms, we only managed to get asleep around 1am only to be wakened at 4.30am. The noise went on for around 30 to 45 minutes. We phoned reception and were told that a large group had just came back from town and it should quieten down soon. When checking out I went over all the issues and was then asked oh do you want something off. I should not have had to be asked this when checking out if a guest has the issues we had during our stay it should have been an automatic reduction. Finally the guest rooms are cold and the beds and pillows are the most uncomfortable I had ever experienced.

Room Tip: If you want to sleep stay at another hotel.

Myself and my now Fianceé stayed hear for two nights from 13th-15th February 2015. It was 100% one of the most accommodating and nicest places to stay. I emailed beforehand as I was planning to propose and they upgraded us free of charge to the suite, I found out later that it was the bridal suite, really nice touch! Beautiful old building, free bottle of prosecco in the lovely restaurant (thank you to the manager) and just an overall fantastic stay. Thank you to all the bar, restaurant and reception staff who made this an unforgettable stay!

Little tip: Sligo and leitrim are beautiful counties, visit the local glencar waterfall for great views!

Room Tip: Rooms I believe all have a view, staff very accommodating

Enormous, conventional, poor value (€105 for a small, uninspiring double without breakfast), far from town center -- everything I find annoying about a place to sleep. The day I was there, the grounds were crawling with Irish politicians and bureaucrats counting election votes. I recognized the breed just by watching them walk and talk, and only later found out who they were. If you like pretentious international chain hotels, you'll probably be very satisfied.

The one interesting aspect is that it occupies the massive, architecturally unique building that operated from 1855 through 1992 (!) as the St Columbas Lunatic Asylum (they probably . I have to hand it to Clarion -- they took a building with a fascinating history of misery and confinement and turned it into a bland piece of commercial milktoast. Example: one of the two impressive limestone churches adjacent to the main building is now used to hold children's birthday parties.

The best I can say, having arrived by car, is that they have ample free parking. The worst is that the absurd size of the building can lead to a 5 minute walk to your room from the single entrance. I suggest they remodel it into about 200 cozy B&B's.

Room Tip: Time the walk to the room before you accept it, unless you like indoor hiking.

Dear John C,
It's a pity our beautiful listed building was not to your taste. I do hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Ireland.

We are a family of five, with the youngest being 8 months. Booked a late getaway for the school mid terms. Warm welcome from reception set the tone for a wonderful short break. Family room is enormous with a separate kitchen area and lounge with a separate bed room with a double and single bed. The sofa in the lounge is a sofa bed. Just what we needed as we could put the baby down and what the TV in the lounge without disturbing her. Room was spotless. Beds were comfy save for the sofa bed which was a bit hard. We booked B&B with evening meal and was very happy with the food. Good selection at breakfast and the evening meal was very nice. We used the pool twice and the water was warm and the changing rooms clean. Hotel was buzzing with a wedding and a Feis being hosted. Altogether a very enjoyable stay and we have plans to return during the summer hols. Here's hoping we get the same deal.

Where do I start, firstly had a great weekend in Sligo due to great company and plenty of laughs. The clarion did not contribute to the great weekend except for providing a clean room and bed!. Rooms basic but clean. Dinner included in our package was terrible. Reheated potatoes and veg, gristly steak and desert was also poor. 2 cocktails were also part of our package. These were also poor quality we only ordered one and left it untouched. Seems to be very family orientated hotel but should not mean quality should suffer. Had 2 spa treatments which were good, but again told to be there for 1045. Waited until 1120 until I was taken. I will definitely be returning to Sligo but I will be avoiding the clarion.,

Good hotel wih great pool and spacious rooms. The staff were particularly good and my wife in particular very impressed. Comfortable beds and good central location to town centre. Note this is a large building and appears to be a former institution so has a slightly gothic vibe on arrival but once in it has all the feel of a modern hotel. Crazy golf available but weather didn't allow us to try. Excellent free wifi throughout
