“Creevykeel Court Tomb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Never in the US could a person freely enter a 5000+year old tomb to find no one there but you and the cattle surrounding the site eating the grass growing through the rocks! But here in this off the road tourist site merely marked by a little sign near Mullaghmore, IR, is this rock tumbled spiritual burial ground. One is overcome by the sheer insignificance of modern life when faced with the permanence of this prehistoric spiritual site.

“5000 years and untouched”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2010

It's a strange feeling walking into this place, undeveloped, apart from a small sign you make your own way around. It's like looking up at the night sky, and you get that small feeling inside. 5000 years old and unchanged well worth a look and a great veiw of donegal bay too.

Where else but Ireland - and Sligo - could you park your car by the side of the main road, walk through a couple of gates and find yourself experiencing a 5,000 year old tomb? We often stop at Creevykeel and clamber over the ancient rocks, imagining the people who cremated their dead here. Unlike so many ancient sites, expect to have Creevykeel to yourself - it's quiet and the solitude lets you experience the spirituality of the site. Let children climb on the rocks - carelully mind. Look out to the west, past Mullaghmore to the Ocean. Evenings are best. Creevykeel isn't a major attraction and might not be worth a long detour, but if your driving from Sligo up to Donegal, remember to stop and enjoy the tranquility. Absolutely no facilities on site but lots of towns and pubs nearby - and it's free.
