Owner description: Charleville castle is a building which has been rescued from near ruin by volunteers and a voluntary organisation - it has been described as Irelands leading historical architect, Francis Johston's masterpiece. It is maintained authentic and unchanged and we rotate volunteers to mind it 24 hours a day 365 days a year - but also to keep it open to the public. it is famous for its ghosts stories and unique architecture - but it is not a state-funded project and depends entirely on volunteers and supporters - so many people, thousands, have expressed their love of the building and support - we hope you will get a real feeling of what it is to keep a castle like this alive when you visit - see you here!

“A Reclaimed Treasure of Lost Ireland!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

A potentially lost treasure of the all too rapidly vanishing Ireland of old is gradually and lovingly being restored to its former grandeur by it owner, Bonnie Vance, and the head of the Charleville Trust, Dudley Stewart, aided by a small group of dedicated volunteers. An incredible example of over-the-top Regency era flamboyance, the castle, to which William Morris, Lord Byron and Percy Shelley all made architectural contributions, Charleville Castle is amazingly unique. The extravagent plasterwork in the Ballroom alone makes the castle well worth a visit. Add to this several beautifully restored and furnished rooms, an extremely rare "flying" staircase and numerous ghost stories and Charleville Castle offers something for every taste!

“Well worth the time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

This was like a forgotten gem that is slowly being restored. Yes it is run by volunteers but their genuine love for the castle comes through in the stories and the fact that they continue to work there without pay for extended periods of time. The restoration is privately funded so the cost to tour goes toward fixing the beautiful building.

“Tired but a nice place to visit.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

I have been to Charleville Castle on 2 occassions. I enjoyed both times very much and the caretakers really love this place.
I also noted that although there is much work to accomplish to make it "pristine", the volunteers really could clean the grounds up and make it look more presentable. Also, letting someone graffiti the side/back of part of the castle is in bad taste. The ground outside could very well keep someone from wanting to go inside and that would be a mistake. It's a shame there aren't any grants to be had to restore it faster.
I would go back again and again and even volunteer but, get rid of those hideous stages. They cheapen up the castle.

“Charleville Castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

We visited Charleville Castle our 1st time in September of 2009 and had a wonderful experience. The grounds are reminiscence of a time gone by, but the caretakers, most all volunteers, do a great job of keeping up the existing place. There is much work to be done and such a large place to maintain. There were eight on the tour in 2009 and it was a great learning experience. We revisited Charleville Castle again in September of 2012 with special invitation. I had been corresponding with a new friend, one of the caretakers, who had given us a private tour our return visit. It was like coming home. Each turn around the grounds, you find something different. Charleville was featured on "Worlds Most Haunted Places" so if you're looking for a spook, never know, might run into one. The Grand Stair case is a great place to take a group picture. Wonderful place to visit and get to know.
There's not really a fee, but they ask for donations to help keep the restorations going.
Thanks Dudley for making the second visit even more educational and fun.Great Seeing you all again. We will be back.!!!
