Owner description: Charleville castle is a building which has been rescued from near ruin by volunteers and a voluntary organisation - it has been described as Irelands leading historical architect, Francis Johston's masterpiece. It is maintained authentic and unchanged and we rotate volunteers to mind it 24 hours a day 365 days a year - but also to keep it open to the public. it is famous for its ghosts stories and unique architecture - but it is not a state-funded project and depends entirely on volunteers and supporters - so many people, thousands, have expressed their love of the building and support - we hope you will get a real feeling of what it is to keep a castle like this alive when you visit - see you here!

“Don't waste your time”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012

We were charged 8 Euro per person to visited the Castle and we only got to go into 4 rooms. Total waste of time. The place has trash everywhere. I wish I could have gotten my money back. If you want to see it just drive up and walk around, but do not pay the money to go in.

We are soory that you didn't enjoy your visit. We are a voluntary organisation - our principal aim was always to rescue the castle from total collapse - this we are managing but with increasing restrictions - the rooms you visited are the only rooms available to the public under normal staffing (all volunteers). access to other rooms requires much more substantial Safety arrangements. Also you must have visited after our annual festival which went well but was followed by persistant downpours. Mobilising volunteers to get everyting back in place has not been easy. we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in ireland and apologise sincerely - it is time for us to regroup - but please we must not take our eye of the real ball that is "keeping the castle dry and safe" - thank you and i hope we will do better in the future

“Nice area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

Visited this castle while staying in Tullamore, was very sad to see a castle like this left in the hands of amatures. Disco balls hanging off trees, PINK park benchs and lot and lots of debris around the castle!!! Furniture left out side under trees and make shift tents??? Inside the castle was lovely to see, ceilings are so beautiful but alot of repo furniture put into some rooms which took from the actual antiques. And most disgusting of all one fire place had a stove front put onto it???? Why any one would do this is beyond me. Castle was slightly eerie but definitly worth visiting! Surrounding area was very nice, and the King tree is at the entrance which was lovely. beware if carring young children as they do talk of ghosts

“Gothic type castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

There are only a few rooms that you can see which is a pity but the rooms that you do see are amazing if a bit shabby - we were unable to visit the gardens which was disappointing but worth a visit - i will go back as they are refurbishing it to see the progress.

A group of us visited the Castle recently (charged €8 pet head) and we were greeted by a French girl who would be our 'guide'. It became apparent not long into the tour that she did not like being interrupted or asked questions! Also, as we had read other reviews we were dismayed to realise we would only see a fraction of the Castle due to the fact that it was either 'unsafe', ' unauthorized', 'staff only' areas! Our guide for example was reluctant to explain the top floor layout, or what other nooks and crankies there where. The actual tour is infact a handful of rooms on the first floor. The stories of ghost activity was vague, yes our guide had heard noises at night when alone in her room, yes the ghost Harriet was mentioned, we were told she was the daughter of the last Countess Emily who married there in 1873. (This conflicts with Harriets year of death on the offical website which says it was 1861!). The problem was our guide clearly lacked knowledge on the history of the people who had lived there, and their relationship with the locals and ruined for us our experience by her passive aggressive manner. Do not waste your money on this. It is a rip off.
