At the Boulevard Guesthouse, you arrive a stranger, but you leave a friend. I am touched by Sadie's kindness...I mentioned at breakfast at the guesthouse how much I was enjoying her Irish music, and how my fraternal grandmother emigrated from Ireland to America. When I checked out, Sadie presented me with a gift of a CD which included a song about a father's immigrant eyes...We played the song in the car and it brought tears to my eyes.
The Boulevard is a small b&b with 5 guest rooms right in town, walking distance to Matt Malloy's pub and shops and restaurants, yet it is on a stretch of road called the "South Mall" which is quiet at night. We slept well in the blue room upstairs, right on the street overlooking the river. With the windows closed, traffic noise was very faint, and with my earplugs in I couldn't hear it at all. (I am a light sleeper and always travel with earplugs.)
This guesthouse has all the comforts of a moderately priced b&b, and it has warm service, with a fine Irish sense of humor, provided by Sadie, Noreen, and John.
Our blue room had a queen bed which is average in comfort, and wooden floors. Nice shower in ensuite bathroom with plenty of hot water. My 2 daughters were happy with their twin room. Service is informal here...if you need something, just ask. If you want clean towels, let Sadie know and leave your dirty towels in the hallway outside your door. Sadie let us use her computer when we needed to, and her phone too (we charged the calls to our phone card, purchased in Ireland.)
Our television was small and high up, but who needs TV when there is live Irish traditional music within walking distance around the corner?!
Noreen and Sadie fed us well at breakfast, and I grinned my socks off at their down-to-earth sense of humor. There was a choice of breakfasts. You can have porridge as a starter, followed by the cold buffet (cereal, yogurt, fruit); or the Full Irish breakfast; or scrambled eggs and tomatoes. Home-made brown bread and tea or coffee for everybody. And all of these choice are included in the price of your room!
The Boulevard Guesthouse prices are a savings over the Wyatt hotel in high season especially. You will find their website under the name Boulevard-Guesthouse. I notice Rick Steves has included it in his latest guidebook for Ireland.
I owe Sadie a big thank you for putting up with my hundreds of e-mails so patiently and with a sense of humor in my trip-planning phase. I wanted just the right room and Sadie helped me to choose it.
Westport is an attractive town with fun uncrowded shopping and great musical pubs! We loved staying right in town at the Boulevard Guesthouse, and still getting a good night's sleep. A great visit...we'll be back someday.
