“Excellent hotel (apartments)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2007

Stayed in the adjoining apartments with some friends over the New Year period to attend a wedding in the hotel. The apartments are right next to the hotel and overlook the harbour with great views from the balcony. The apartments are first class and very comfortable, though I cannot imagine cooking there as there was not a whole lot of kitchen utensils or delph etc. available. However being so near to the hotel we ate in the restaurant there and the meal was fantastic with some gourment offerings. The food in the bar is cheaper and was also very good.

Had access to all the hotel facilities including the excellent leisure centre (especially the outdoor hot-tub which was great for clearing the head after the night before!).

I would definitely go back and had no major complaints.

Stayed for 4 nights in mid July 2006 with wife and 2 kids in the family apartments...i can say the leisure centre/pool are great for kids because it is the same shallow depth all round ie around 4 ft max....the only criticisms of the hotel I would have are that if you order a meal in the bar it is extremely slow!..at least an hour and although we were there at peak time the bar was not busy as we ate around 5pm..it would be even longer if eating later...because of this we usually ate somewhere else..[try waiting for an hour with 2 young children!] breakfasts are good because although it is self service they at least bring the tea and toast to you!

the apartments are spacious but during the summer there can often be a lot of kids running around them until 11pm or later disturbing your relaxation on the terraces or even in your apartment!..a final point is that the hotel is very expensive considering it's remote location,,you have been warned by an Irish man living in Co Down!

  • Liked — good pool for young childre who are learning to swim
  • Disliked — restaurant/bar service very slow

Just returned from a very relaxing 4 day break. Was very impressed with this excellently refurbished hotel - it was as new. We had a wonderful room overlooking the sea. Most of the staff were excellent - particularly the Lithuanian Lady in charge in the Dining Room. The staff in the Leisure center were also top class.
We look forward to returning next year

There is no doubt as to how Lady Luck can 'make or break' ones opinion of any hostelry that you book.

With the Park Inn, the Lady was definitely on our side! When my wife asked to see some of their rooms with a front view, her initial report was one of disappointment as regards size of rooms. However when she stated this to girl who was showing her around , she was informed of another room that was very spacious but was to rear of Hotel. So she came down to get me and we went to look.

And what a room ! Immense with 1 King and 2 single beds,a sofa ,LCD TV -although a 17'' is too small for size of room-,fridge,tea service, etc etc and a fine large bathroom.Although at rear of Hotel, we were extremely happy with view of distant hills and a nicely landscaped garden as well as no discernable noises-although Kitchens are quite near. 2 big sash windows allowed plenty of light into bedroom.Happy bunnies indeed! Very warm and cosy at all times.
We had Dinner in on 2 nights and it was excellent. Cannot fault a thing with the food but I would in all honesty have to castigate the 4 French waiters who were unbearably stiff and at times bordered on rude with their attitude.Lighten up boys, as your attitude was the only lowpoint of both nights we ate there!!

Breakfast was buffet style except for last morning ,when because it was quiet, we were given table service.A good choice of everything and nicely cooked .The morning staff were a breath of fresh air after the evening dining staff. Attentive and good for a laugh they all added to a pleasant breakfast each morning.

Reception staff were excellent throughout and nothing was a bother to them.Muzak in lounge was non existant so one previous reviewers complaint seems to have been heeded!

The pool and hot-tub etc were very good with good warm temp in pool and sauna etc also above average. After enduring a wet day driving around Achill ,it was a great way to end it.

A few gripes: hallways etc need a bit of sprucing up with paint etc, parking is a bit of a walk with luggage BUT most of all ,be very carefull of the 'Broadband internet' in corridor! It is advertised as such but is extremely slow and expensive. In fairness to the guy who installed it ,(Stephen), he did refund us our money when we complained to him by phone as to how much we spend on it with such dismal results, so be warned! If you need to get fast results best go to Newport or Library in Achill Sound.

We most certainly will return next year for a few more days ,based on a very good stay ,(gripes aside!), and will seek out our cavernous room once again!

  • Disliked — Dining staff attitude

Stayed here in October as part of a wedding party in one of the apartments. Have written a previous review praising but now have a very different opinion. We stayed in one of the apartments and found a number of problems, soiled sofa and walls, no curtains on the glass doors, broken doorbell and outdoor light which was extremely dangerous considering we were on the first floor and the steps were not user friendly and difficult with a pram. Also there was a power cut which one afternoon which some how didnt seem to affect the hotel guests but left the apartments with no light or heating. It took 3 calls to reception to be told what was actually happening. We also woke to no heating or hot water one morning as did a number of the apartments as the system seemed to shut down overnight. We stayed for 4 nights and would have to say that the redeeming features are the food and leisure facilities which were both very good. As well as the poor apartments the other major failing was security. The apartments are on the side of the hotel and the walk is exposed with minimum lighting. We had late drinks in the bar one of the evenings, on making their way back to their apartment 2 female members of our group were physically attacked and badly beaten as they had a cigarette outside the front door by two men who had also been in the bar.(smoking is not allowed inside). There was only a night porter on and although very helpful was no protection. The police would not attend as there was no one on duty and we waited over an hour for an ambulance. The police did not come until 2 days later. Would point out that the duty manager was excellent at 3.00 am trying to get police/ambulance and generally trying to help in a very bad situation. The hotel assured us that this is not normal but I would like to point out that the men were local. This ruined the trip for these members of the wedding party as they were left badly bruised and we were all disturbed to see that on the following evening there was still no additional security despite my request. On checking out, the women and there immediate family were only offered a 50 euro deduction for one night and found the general manager to be extremely inconsiderate considering the dreadful 2 days that was experienced at his hotel. Would not stay again, did not feel safe and was appalled by the whole experience in terms of security and aftercare received by people who were attacked on their premises. One a positive note, if you have booked your wedding at this hotel, they do it very well and are extremely professional and attentive to ensure the day a success, a tribute to the staff. Just make sure to book a hotel room .

Had a great stay in early October, the leisure centre is great, the outdoor hot tub is really fab, I am surprised that the rates were so good, maybe because its only a few years early, unfortunately we did not get a room to the front which would have had great views!
