“Some upgrades needed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2007

We stayed in this hotel in Feb 07, during the half term holidays. The other guests were either 70+ or very young families which created an unusual atmosphere in the bar area but the gym facilities which were very good were always quiet as a result. The pool area is nice, although industrial in appearance, and obviosly very busy with young children.
The rooms however , were very disappointing, they are smaller than they appear in the website, and in general the rooms are functional rather than luxurious or attractive. The bathrooms were again functional but compact, and definitely in need of upgrades, the sealant around the bath had lifted and was peeling and there was mould on the tile grout. The major gripe that we had with the rooms was that the walls seemed to be made of paper, on our last night we were up all night with the enforced soundtrack of the other guests behaviour, we could literally hear what next door were depositing in the toilet! When i mentioned this at checkout the receptionist suggested we should have contacted the night porter! Not very helpful.
On the other hand the restaurant food really was delicious from breakfast to dinner and the staff were very hardworking and pleasant. But as a whole i felt all this was undermined by the fact that an uninterupted night's sleep seems to be mission impossible in this hotel.

Myself and my wife went to Westport for a night away before the Christmas, just to relax and spend some time together. I had booked the Hotel direct and sent an email to confirm. My only request was that we had a quite room away from the Christmas parties which I knew would be going on. I was told no problem we can give you a quite room but there might be people going to bed late and there might be some noise on the corridors. I told the receptionist that I understand that as I work in a hotel and it would be fine so long as we were not sleeping over the party.
On check in I again asked the receptionist is this a quite room yes she said it would be quite you will have no problems. We were kept awake all night with a party that was being held in the restaurant. The hotel had two parties that night one in the restraurant and the other in the function room. Music stoped at 2am. Overall I was very disappointed, the room was basic and in need of some upgrading food in the bar was okay nothing to write home about and the breakfast was terrible, cold one had to join a line of people if you wanted anything from juice to the hot carvery which was cold, not enough staff the restaurant was dirty from the party the night before.
Overall very disappointing for what should of being a nice christmas break...

  • Liked — The bar is nice and the location of the hotel is good but so are the others in Westport town
  • Disliked — Breakfast and the noise

Myself my partner and 5 year old son decided to take a last minute break in Westport over Xmas. We booked our break on line and received a really good rate for 2 nights B&B and 1 dinners. The staff in the Hotel were absolutely wonderful nothing we asked for was to much trouble for them. The Children’s Club was brilliant our son loved it so much there were activities organised daily in the morning and in the evening and when our son was been entertained in the Children’s Club we had the pleasure of having a romantic meal in the Restaurant each evening. The food in the Restaurant was fantastic there was plenty of choice on the menu and the staff were wonderful. On the last day of my stay I booked some treatments in the spa, which was absolutely wonderful I don’t think I have ever experience such luxury and relaxation – I had a facial and a hot stone massage and I also spent some time in the relaxation room. When we were checking out I re-booked a holiday for the February mid-term I’m counting the days already.

Myself and my wife stayed at the Hotel Westport (HW) between 25th and 28th November 2006, before moving onto the Connemara Coast Hotel in Galway for 3 nights (see review elsewhere). We picked the HW due to it's general location in County Mayo, and also because it was located a few minutes walk from the town.We booked the hotel through Cresta Holidays - I'd recommend anyone from the UK to try their website if you are thinking of booking a holiday in Ireland, as they do some great '3 nights for 2' offers and can sometimes be cheaper than booking through the hotel direct. We paid £164 in total for 3 nights B&B.
After a short flight from Bristol to Shannon with Ryanair ( arriving 20 minutes EARLY- yes EARLY! ), we had a decent 3 hr drive up to Westport. The hotel is easily found, just off one of the main roads in the town. First impressions were pretty good, the hotel has a modern look although you might say it looks like a big travel lodge if you were being uncharitable. There's plenty of parking. Although it is very close to the centre of Westport it is in a quiet location, in a parkland sort of area.
Initially when we checked in, there appeared to be a problem as the receptionist couldn't find our names on their list. We handed over our confirmation from Cresta, and we were asked to take a seat in the lounge whilst everything was 'sorted out'. Sure enough, a few minutes later the receptionist came over, apologised for the delay, and handed us over our key card.
Upon arrival at our room we were rather delighted to find that we had been upgraded to a deluxe suite, of which there are only 6 in the hotel! Now I don't know whether this was because we were just lucky, or whether it was down to a mix up between the hotel and Cresta. If there was a mix up, the hotel could still have put us in a standard room ( the hotel wasn't full ) and we would have been none the wiser! We were so pleased that we didn't pursue it with the management in case there had been a mistake and we got moved! Anyhow, the room itself was very comfortable and spacious - we were joking that it actually had more floor area than our house! It's a bit difficult to give a fair room review as we were paying roughly £25 p.p.p.n which was very good value but I don't know how much the deluxe suites cost if you actually book in advance. I have to say that for a deluxe suite the bathroom, though spacious, could do with a bit of updating. The bath was very small and there was no seperate shower - something you increasingly see as standard in ordinary rooms. There were also a few damp patches around the tiling. It was just a bit plain. Don't get me wrong, I'm normally the sort of person who is happy with the bathroom as long as the shower works and the loo flushes, it's just that if you were someone who'd splashed out on a suite you might have been a bit underwhelmed. Another slight gripe is that the radiators were quite noisy at night - the 2nd and 3rd nights we actually turned them off. Again if I was paying for a suite I'd expect a quiet night's sleep and to stay warm. Given what I've just said, I'd imagine that some of the standard rooms need similar attention.
We dined out in Westport on the first night at Twig's Bistro - good value, nothing spectacular - and went to a few of the pubs. Westport is a lively town all year round I'd guess, and there are absolutely loads of pubs and restaurants - you're spoiled for choice!
When we got back, we got some drinks from the Maple Bar and sat in front of the beautiful fire in the lounge and fell asleep!
Breakfast the next morning, in the main restaurant was a fairly standard buffet affair, plenty of choice of cooked, fruits, cereal etc.
and decent service. Some really, really strong coffee as well!
This set us up nicely for what was ultimately an unsuccessful attempt of Croagh Patrick - it got a bit windy three-quarters of the way up!
We had our evening meal that night in the hotel restaurant and this was a 34 EURO a la carte 3 course plus coffee. We thought this was excellent value - a good menu, with fresh, local, ingredients and a reasonably interesting wine list. I'm not saying it was the best meal I've had this year, but we would quite happily have eaten there every night and I'd recommend anyone going there to give it a try.
I would say that the HW is probaly not that good an hotel for families. It is very much geared, understandably, towards couples and groups of friends and has a generally 'adult' feel to it. When I say 'adult', I don't mean that they play porno movies on the big screen in the bar, but there aren't really any child - friendly areas, and they will probaly get bored. The hotel does run a 'Panda Club' during school holidays which presumably is for parents who come holiday with their kids and then don't want to spend any time with them. There are probaly better hotels for families around.
We did not use any of the Spa facilities whilst we were there so cannot comment on them.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Westport. The hotel is very well located in the town itself, and Mayo generally. We had a bit of luck with our room, and although I would say that most of the rooms are probaly due refurbishment, they are more than adaquate for the money, and kept spotlessly keen. The hotel overall has a clean and modern feel, but perhaps lacks a little character. The bar and restaurant are good value and attractive. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay again and would recommend it for the money. However, it's one of those hotels where everything was 'quite nice' and 'good value' rather than outstanding. The competition in Co. Mayo is increasing all the time and I would say that the hotel management will need to keep working hard and re-investing for the HW to maintain it's position in the market.

This did not feel like a 'getaway' kind of place. It was more like a Holiday Inn or Double Tree with a spa (which I cannot review because I did not use). This is not necessarily bad, but certainly not what we were expecting. It did the job but not much more. The room was standard, the food was standard, the beer was standard. Apparently a great place for weddings, reunions and a place to lay one's head. There is, however, lots to do and see in Westport and the hotel is a short walk into town. We had a great time pub-hopping and window peeking. The entire town was preparing for a Gaelic football match and is was fun to participate with them. The hotel is just a hotel. The town itself is an experience.

  • Liked — Proximity to town.
  • Disliked — The general atmosphere.
  • Tips/Secrets — Aim for a local b and b or another hotel in the area.

I booked at the Hotel Westport because of the spa and for golf...that's it. Unfortunately, I didn't book my massage appointment until I arrived and they had no availability. Also, went to book a tee-time for golf and was told that they had none left! To be fair, there was some big party of older folks there (one was celebrating her 100th birthday!) and they monopolized most of the golf and spa.

This hotel is good for location, but the value isn't there. It was clean enough, but nothing special. The breakfast buffet was good (not great). One funny thing: We saw that it was a buffet and went to help ourselves. Some older ladies (I'm telling you, we happened to be the youngest people at the hotel this night) were waiting by the buffet and giving us confused looks. I selected my eggs, bacon, etc. and sat down. My husband came back to the table and told me that the ladies had scolded him because they were waiting to be served and we just came and took for ourselves! We didn't realize that we needed to be served....isn't self-serve the point of a buffet???

Note: We used the Rick Steves guide and it wasn't good for Westport. His restaurant recommendations were way off. Just tourist traps. All in all Westport is a fun town!
