“Top location, cheap as chips !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2011

This hostel is truly a backpackers hostel. The old building has been here since 1780 !!
Yes, this means that there's no lifts or anything fancy but it is what it says it is....an old mill !
Our Double room was basic but comfortable and clean.

The staff were really friendly and so helpful. It was good to stay in a hostel where all the staff were local people and could give good tips on where to go and what to see etc.

We figured out on day two that the hot dial in the shower was the opposite way round and once we found this out, there was hot water in abundance.

The kitchen common room area is the heart of the old mill and is where we met new friends and chilled out.

The location is brilliant, right in town but yet in a quiet court yard. this means, no taxis or long walks home.

The homemade brown bread in the morning was fab and freshly made which we enjoyed every morning.

There is also free wifi ! Happy days.
We felt we got good hostel accommodation in the centre of town at a reasonable price which was all we wanted. The free home made bread and free wifi and excellent staff was a free bonus ! Thank you.

This was by far the most disgusting place I have ever seen/slept in. The outside of the building is adorable but the accommodations are beyond atrocious. We stayed in a private three person room which was about the size of a large bathroom. There was a bunk bed and a trundle bed and once the beds were all pulled out there was no room for our luggage. There was snot and boogers on the walls, the carpets had clearly never been vacuumed (there was a bellybutton ring on the floor-not ours), dirty handprints, and the most shocking find was the blood stains on my sheets. This was discovered after we were instructed to change our own sheets. Yay!
The bathroom on our floor had no toilet seat, no ventilation, the dirtiest walls I have ever seen, the carpets were sticky, there were inadequate window treatments, the shower was outside and there was no hot water. There was also no security which we found out when we were followed back to our room and found a man waiting there.
The town of Westport is adorable but I wouldn't recommend the Old MIll Hostel to my worst enemies.
The kitchen was decent but it closed at 11 but they suggested we stop using it at 10. For 66 euro a night it was a complete ripoff.

Room Tip: Choose another place!

Boy was I glad I found this Hostel. The hostel couldn't not have been more helpful and welcoming! I just needed some much needed rest and recuperation time, and this hostel was ideal. The shower was a bit hot for my liking but the beds were just fine.

Room Tip: Try the big dorms

Stayed here for a few nights last weekend. Really lovely old stone building and an exceptionally central location perfect for exploring the town centre. The Staff were very very friendly and extremely helpful and made us feel so welcome. We stayed in a female dorm that was fresh, clean and airy. Slept like a log every night. The homemade bread for breakfast was delicious and is baked every night. The kitchen is the social hub of the place and we met all sorts of interesting young backpackers from all around the world. We had a brilliant time and we'll certainly be back again, for sure

Double room comprised of a doubld under bunk bed..one locker. Doors were getting stuck and didnt' close properly, carpet was sticky, the one crappy curtain was filthy and stained. Bathroom was clean but no hot water and shower was in a seperate block adn again had no hot water.. shower was at 10 am on Sunday morning.. so not late in the day. No proper coffee available ( Nescafe doesn't cut in a good hostel buy a coffee machine!)
Really truly disappointing - Irish hostels must do better. I'm Irish and truly embarrased by this place. I've been in hostels all over Europe and done the Camino in Spain where you stay in different hostels every night for about 8 euros- this ranked with the most basic hostel accommodation I've ever stayed in and was priced at 49 euros for a double room. NUTS! I cannot recommend this place at all.. sorry!

I think the thing to keep in mind is that this is a hostel. When we were planning our trip to Ireland and were looking at places in westport, the old mill looked really nice, and we were able to get a private room for about 25 euros less per night than if we stayed at a bed and breakfast. well, that 25 euros made a big difference. For a hostel it was really just fine, the staff was friendly, there is a huge common area and kitchen with plenty of cookware and utensils, the room was warm enough (we stayed in mid-November) and the bathrooms were clean.
However, our room was quite small (there was barely enough room to walk around the bed) and the bed wasn't that comfortable. The shower was across the driveway so I had to change over in that bathroom before heading back to my room, which was a bit of a problem because the bathroom with the shower in it didn't appear to be heated. In addition the walls were very, very thin. We could hear every word of the staff member's phone conversation, which seemed to go on all night (fortunately it was in another language, which made it easier to tune out).
So it was fine, perhaps a bit below my expectations. However the whole time we were there I was just wishing we had forked over the extra money to stay in a B&B! This place is great for those that truly want the hostel experience, but for those that were hoping for something more cozy I would recommend spending the extra money on something nicer, as it is not that much more.

Lovely room, stayed in 3 person room. radiator came on during night, couldn't turn it off. Place got really hot. checkout is at 10am. not good if you are out the night before. better and friendlier than other hostels i have stayed in. would go back again!...as long as the radiator got fixed.
