Myself and partner stayed here the weekend of the 25/1 for one night as a treat for my birthday. We were so looking forward to staying here as we had just found out that the owners of the Westport Plaza and the Castlecourt (two fab hotels) had just taken over the running of this establishment so obviously we expected the same high standards but alas that was not to happen.
Checkin - Receptionist was lovely, really friendly and check in was quick and hassle free
Room - Room was lovely, you could smell the new carpet as you stepped off the elevator which indictates that they are in the process of renovating. The room itself was lovely, it had everything you needed, grand size bed (albeit the pillows are like sleeping on rocks!), flat screen tv, tea/coffee making facilities, trouser press. The bathroom was also lovely and the shower was very powerful which I must say I love in hotels, the only downside in the bathroom was that one of the towels had not been replaced by housekeeping and had someone elses tan all over it also there is bowl of cotton wool located in the bathroom and on closer look some of them had been used and placed back in the bowl and obviously not seen by housekeeping either.
Spa - We had booked the "Eastern Delight package" on entering the spa there was a family in front of us with small children which I found a little confusing as I have never been to a spa where there are small children, it turned out however that in order to get to the swimming pool you needed to check in at the spa reception desk, no big deal or so I thought.
The lady on the spa reception desk (Sandra I think her name was) was lovely and very professional got us all sorted out with our robe and slippers, again having to do this in the dressing rooms for the pool trying to dodge all the puddles was something I had never experienced in any other spa I had been to.
Sandra then brought us into the relaxtion room, which I usually love however it was very hard to relax listening to the children in the pool screaming and shouting which you could hear through the vents in the relaxation room also you could hear everyting that was going on outside the relaxation room, phone conversations, staff converstions, people just coming and going which was not very relaxing - maybe they should visit the relaxation rooms in Dromoland Castle or The Brehon in Killarney or even the C Spa in the Carlton Hotel in Bunclody.
Treatments - We were then brought to our room for our treatments - on entering the room you could see it needed alot of paint work to it and it just felt like a room in a house, no candles lighting. Eventually the lady dimmed the lights before the treatments. Usually at a spa they have big blankets or a quilt to cover you however I was asked to cover myself with a towel. The treatments were good and the lady was very professional however I could not fully enjoy them as I was freezing cold the entire time and could not relax, the lady had to keep putting the hot oil on my hands and arms as she herself kept saying how cold I was - this was so disappointing as I was so looking forward to these treatments and I was just left disappointed. We were then brought back into the relaxtion room but with all the noise outside the room I thought I would be more relaxed in my room.
Dinner - We had dinner on the 4th floor, it was fairly busy with a few birthday parties going on but this just added to the atmosphere which was really good. The menu wasnt much, Beef, Pork & fish - the food was delicious and the service was good. We tried to pay for our meal but the waiter insisted we put it on our room we felt we had no choice but to do so, we were never shown any receipt nor did we sign anything to enable them to put it on our room, very concerning.
Bar - After dinner we went down to the bar for a few drinks - they had a gentleman from Scotland (I think) singing, he was good but kept telling long stories before each song which got very annoying. The girl behind the bar was very friendly and even though it was very quiet when we arrived it did get very busy and she handled it with no problems at all, I felt sorry for her a little bit as she was on her own and had to not only serve drinks but was on the floor collecting glasses also. The music finished at 12.30pm some residents in the bar were not happy with this and the atmosphere did change at that point.
Breakfast - Buffet style which I personally cannot stand. The continental breakfast was ok, the usual, cerals, pastires, fruit - we asked if they had any yoghurts and were told no but if you mix the natural yoghurt with jam it is just the same, eh no thanks! No milk on the table so we asked one of the waitresses (oriental girl) for some milk, her expression on her face never changed and she just walked away so we presumed she had ignored us, that was not the case she actually walked over to the table beside us were people were eating took their milk off their table and left on our table she still had not once opened her mouth to speak, we had to apologise to the table next to us. The hot food was terrible, even my partner could not eat it and he eats everything! By the time I brought it down to the table it was cold, the orange juice was out of a carton it just tasted like diluted orange and the apple juice as fizzy!!!!!
Checkout - checkout was quick and painful, however when we asked to see our resteraunt bill from the night before they did not have it so we had no choice but to pay in full without ever seeing what we had actually paid for. The receptionist was lovely and very friendly.
