“Sorry it's over”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

Another visit to Knockranny, and another success – just as my wife and I expected. This must be our fifth or sixth visit and once again we found ourselves marvelling at the consistency and excellence of the service provided by the attentive and ever cheerful staff. For us, Knockranny House Hotel has no rival.

Stayed for two nights - good value - 219 euros for 2 nights B&B + a table d'hote dinner. Good food, friendly staff, inviting bar where they know how to make a good Martini, satisfactory rooms. About 10 mins walk from the town centre. I'd stay here again, certainly

This is our second time dining in the restaurant and once again the food and wine were superb if expensive. We love good food so do not give such accolades lightly. The service was ok but not at the same standard of the food. We have eaten all over Mayo and this is by far and away the best restaurant and hopefully might inspire others as the Mayo 'eating scene' is limited, even Mount Falcon is not as good as it should be following the departure of their excellent chef last year.

I asked for a room with a view and was told I would have a room on the 4th floor. This turned out, after a long and rambling walk down endless corridors scattered haphazardly with pieces of furniture, to be a room on the ground floor, overlooking a small bush. The toiletries were of a very low quality and the hair dryer was a bit fawlty towers. Considering the price tag and the fact that this was a grand deluxe room, I felt quite a bit hard done by! We had booked dinner in the restaurant and it was a huge let down!! Service was minimal, food was of a low quality and poorly presented. (A steak on the 52 euro menu carried an extra surcharge and was a very small tough piece of meat. I have bought much better steaks in lidl for less than a fiver. Our waitress was surly, the menu very unappealing!! I struggled to find something I could eat and ended up with fillet of sea trout which was full of bones, swimming in oil and scattered with what was described as brown shrimp but looked dull and embryo-like and rendered the dish almost inedible. DO NOT come here!! Possibly it was good once but definitely not any more. Bland, tasteless and devoid of charm. Do yourself a favour and check out the Ice house hotel in Ballina instead! I would check in there right now if I could!!

This was our second visit to this hotel. We spend three nights this time and found it very relaxing. The bedroom was well equipped, large and very clean as were all the public areas. We found all the staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good and the service was quite good considering how busy the restaurant was in the late morning. As we were on holiday we werein no hurry.
We had a bar lunch twice and found it good and with large portions. We wanted to watch the 6 Nations Rugby match on the Sunday of our visit and the staff were more than willing to serve our lunch in front of the TV. Just like home!
Our package included one dinner. We were only able to get a table at 7:15pm, which we considered too early. The meal was adequate but nothing special. We were served too quickly for our liking. We had planned to eat a second night in the hotel restaurant but decided after the first night to eat in Westport town.It is only a short taxi ride into town. It is just a bit too far to walk especially as the return trip is up hill.

Stayed here for two nights and almost all was lovely apart from our room which is in the old part of hotel. Our bathroom was very dated and did not have a bath which is very poor. Toiletries must have been scare too. Considering we paid 360 for the two nights I don't think it was fair not having a bath in our room. I know also that the spa is meant to be great but facial I got was very disappointing only lasted 50 mins and supposed to last the hour.

Spent a few days here recently, myself my husband and 13 year old child. We had availed of a family package which included bike hire for The Greenway. The hotel was nice and has a lot to recommend it. There were a few things which didnt work for us though. We arrived earlier than the check in time and were asked to come back at 3pm but were not invited to sit in the bar or the drawing room while we waited which wasnt the warmest of welcomes Children were not allowed to use the pool which was a big disappointment to our swim mad child. I understand how noisy children could interfere with the enjoyment of other guests but we had said we would accompany her throughout and as she was the only child was unlikekly to be noisy or disruptive. They did offer vouchers for a pool for another hotel but this was neither convenient or relaxing which is what you want when on a break. it also meant that the pool, thermal suite and spa were denied to me as I could not leave her alone while we relaxed in spa. This was one of the features that attracted me to the hotel in the first place and so was a big disappointment. Throughout our stay I felt that because we had a child with us we did not receive the service or treatment we expected. Our room was small and very basic with a window overlooking a narrow courtyard and facing onto a wall-no view ,no vista and slightly claustrophobic bearing no resemblance to photographs on hotel website. In it''s favour the beds were extremely comfortable. There was no DVD player in room, an important aid to keeping a young teenager entertained when the pool was not an option and when I spoke to them at reception they found a DVD player for us. At breakfast which was very average we were seated in a part of the restaurant with no window and no view even though there were seats available in the two lower sections with large windows and lovely views. I suspect that had we travelled as a couple we might have had a better experience but feel they should not offer a family package if they do not really welcome families. Small niggles also were lack of toiletries in bathroom-one shampoo, one shower gel, one shower cap for three people, no tissues etc just little details but sometimes its the little things that make the difference. We ate in the bar one evening and the food was very good. The waiter there was the only member of staff to make us feel welcome during our stay though thr receptionist was friendly when we were checking out. too little, too late. a sense of a hotel resting on its reputation. Must try harder.
