“Lovely room- great staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

Stayed one night while traveling Ireland. We visited Kilkenny primarily to tour the Smithwick's brewery at St. Francis Abbey, which I highly recommend (the brewery has been there since 1710 and will be closing in January). Pembroke was lovely and exceeded our expectations. First of all: PARKING. Sure, it's not a big car park, but it exists, which is lovely. Staff was gracious and helpful in all aspects. Upon check in, we discovered the window to our room was left open and some little gnats had formed a colony on the inner windowsill. We told the front desk on our way out to the brewery and while we were away, housekeeping came and sprayed a repellent, then cleaned the area. Also, that night was my husband's birthday and poor planning on my part led me to be unprepared in the cake and candle department. I checked with the lounge downstairs and even though the kitchen was closed, the very sweet server went in the back and pulled a dessert from the fridge and even found a birthday candle, then offered it up free of charge. Definitely above and beyond.
ROOM was large and well appointed and we absolutely loved the bath amenities. Water in the area is very limey, so having a good smelling shower gel makes a difference. As is customary in the country, our "king bed" was two twins pushed together, but we expected this. Clean and well furnished, though.
LOCATION is terrific. We parked on arrival and didn't touch the car until we checked out. Kilkenny is a lovely little town. Make sure to visit one of the many parisienne-style bakeries and enjoy a stroll by beautiful, medieval Kilkenny castle.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for such a comprehensive review.

Personal service is important to us and I am pleased that you had the minor problems resolved quickly- next time we’ll have a cake! The car park is supplemented by a second private car park, which is within 2 minute’s walk. The beds are actually designed to be Zipped together, so I will discuss this with housekeeping.

Location in the hearth of Kilkenny is a major feature for our repeat guests, with no need for the car and I’m glad you enjoyed the many sights which are within a few minutes walk.

The Brewery is to finish with commercial brewing but the tour will continue and other visitor attractions will be developed, so you can enjoy it again and the Pembroke on your next visit.

We stayed here for a night on our way back to Dublin from out west. We were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It was in a great location, just a couple of block up from the main part of town. The Blue Bar across the street was a nice spot for a night cap. Parking for the hotel was a little hard to find...about a block away from the hotel. Front desk staff was great. The rooms were very modern and very clean...probably the best of the hotels we stayed in during our trip to Ireland.

Dear Guest

I’m delighted you enjoyed your stay and that the location was ideal for you. We are lucky to have quality bars and restaurants in addition to the visitor attractions around us.

Most of our guests get parking on site and the second car park to which you refer is less than 2mins walk, but we are improving directions to it.

It is great for our staff that you had such a good experience, especially considering us the best of your experiences in Ireland.

We look forward to seeing you again.

Wonderful location. Had parital view of Kilkenny Castle and Cathedral from room. Very soundproof. Free wifi and tolietries. Tub/shower. Flat screen TV. Magnifying mirror. Good and adequate brkst. included in rate of $106 thru skoosh. Friendly staff. King bed with two twin beds pushed together. Not during busy season so was able to get parking at hotel. Dined at Langton's Bar which was designated Ireland's number one bar x 4 years. Ordered from early menu. Only negative was that I gave a postcard to the hotel clerk that was never received in the US.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback.

I am sorry that your postcard didn’t make it and with the good reputation of the postal services, I would not suggest that they were the problem.

Apart from that, I am glad that you enjoyed our facilities and particularly noticed our quiet rooms.

We stayed in the Pembroke Hotel for one night in November. The staff at check in were prompt and friendly. The hotel room was bright, spacious and comfortable, better than we expected for the rate we paid. We had one drink in the bar but found it very quiet so headed out into the city instead. The hotel is in a great location, literally everything on the doorstep. Breakfast the next morning was disappointing. Selection of cereals and juices was good. The fruit salad was tasteless and the scrambled egg I ordered from the kitchen was served cold and very salty. There was only two members of staff on for breakfast service and they seemed run off their feet attending to all the tables.
Overall it was a very enjoyable stay. Big plus for the free convenient car park, location and spacious rooms.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comments.

I am sorry that the breakfast experience wasn’t as good for you as we aspire to and we have improved on checking, especially for the quiet periods, when surprisingly it can be more difficult to achieve consistency.

Apart from that I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay and noticed our staff commitment and the convenience of our carpark and central location.

I recently enjoyed an enjoyable weekend in the Pembroke Hotel as a party of 4 women; I'm 24, two 50 year old women, one of whom is in a wheelchair and finally a 70 year old. It can be hard to find a place that ticks all of our boxes for a weekend away but this place hit the spot! We were given a big family room, which was luxurious yet functional (it even had an iron and ironing board) with two big bathrooms, one was disability friendly and perfectly equipped. We made very good use of the tea facilities and free daily papers! The parking beside the hotel is great also! The central location of the hotel allowed us to go into the city together or split up for a while at our ease, meaning we could all do what we wanted. Kilkenny is a beautiful city, with good shops, cafes with loads of festivals and events so we found plenty to do! The breakfast was tasty with plenty of choice, while the dinner was delicious and the menu included a lot of local produce. Finally I found the staff to be helpful and kind, especially to the elder and sick persons in my group. It was a great weekend and I look forward to making a return with friends...my own age

We stayed at The Pembroke for two nights in October. I really enjoyed my stay and could find no fault with the hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful at all times and nothing was too much trouble. We booked a two night package with dinner on one evening and the hotel offered excellent value for money without compromising on service or standards. The set evening meal was delicious and offered a good choice of dishes with the option of ordering from the a la carte menu for a supplement. The breakfast buffet offered the usual choice of foods and other options which could be ordered from the kitchen. The bedroom was bright, clean and comfortable and well equipped. The only small criticism I could make is that the towels in the bathroom could have been fluffier! The hotel is ideally located on a quiet street near Kilkenny Castle and within walking distance of the shops ,restaurants etc. In fact there is a selection of restaurants and bars within two minutes walk. While the hotel doesn't actually have a spa the Mint Spa is located right next door.I would have no hesitation recommending this hotel to anyone visiting Kilkenny.

i spent two nights in this hotel and would gladly stay for an extra two nights if i had the chance! the location of this hotel is perfect as it is in the centre of the town and everything you could possibly need is in walking distance. The restaurant is also top class with very tasty dishes and the staff are all very kind and helpful people. the residents bar is wonderful and allows sing songs and the whole lot! if you have a guitar i suggest you bring it! fabulous hotel fabulous people and fabulous location....what more could you ask for?!
