“Beautiful café & great selection for veggies & gluten-free diets”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2013

Such a pretty setting! Was here on Dec 6th 2013 with my husband and I have the dual challenge of being a vegetarian and coeliac. Was surprised and delighted to find out from the waitress (who was very helpful) that ALL their soups are gluten-free & come with gluten free bread and that they make a gluten-free dessert every day. For main I went with the lentil & nut loaf (also gluten-free!) which was divine, really filling, great flavour. And then I had a choice of either raspberry meringue roulade with hot raspberry sauce or the gluten-free cake of the day which was chocolate & almond cake with cream. I chose the latter and it was delicious! Its a real little gem in Kilkenny, we really enjoyed it and will be back on our next visit.

“A lovely lunch at the chapter house tearooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2013

Had a lovely lunch at the Chapter house tearooms in Kilkenny. The staff were very friendly and helpful and it also had a lovely atmosphere. I would recommend this restaurant to any tourist visiting Kilkenny to add this restaurant to their "must visit" list.

“Limited coeliac choice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

Located in a beautifully restored setting at the base of this gorgeous building, The Chapter House Tea Rooms have had a lot of thought & consideration put into their appearance & the setting is fabulous.

On our visit the tea rooms appeared to be thriving & there was a strong conversational buzz about the place. Unfortunately the down side of this is that the (excellent) server on duty was clearly stretched beyond capacity without help or support & was also let down by the order providers in the kitchen.

The menu seems quite comprehensive on initial glance, but was let down by having very little provision for one of our party who suffers from coeliac disease. This was a surprise given the vast options provided by so many nearby competitors'.

In addition, we waited quite a very long time for our simple order to be provided (Quiche, Rocky Road desert, fruit juices & coffees), which proved difficult with an impatient & parched duo of a 2 & 3 year old. The lady serving was wonderful & extremely hard working & couldn't apologise enough when she realised how long we had had to wait (although genuinely, it wasn't her fault).

On a positive note, the menu is fairly reasonably priced & once it arrived the absolutely delicious food & beautiful coffee could not be faulted.

The experience we had was disappointing overall, but perhaps we simply caught it on an off day.

“Gluten free food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

I paid my first visit to this premises on Tuesday 27th August with my son and grandchildren aged 2 & 3 respectively. The premises is airy, spacious and well laid out Its in an excellent location and worth a visit.
While placing the order I inquired about their Gluten free food. Apart from dessert or a Brownie there was nothing substantial available, which was disappointing. The waiter was overworked and the provision of food was slow. Our two young ones had to wait for ages before they got their drinks and food which didn't need cooking. Recognition should be given to parents with young children to aid them in keeping the children occupied. There is no excuse for any food providing establishment not to have a reasonable supply of Gluten Free nutritional food. 9Bars, Natural Bars, Naked Bars etc, etc, are all readily available and suitable to all palates. Personally I find that the provision of gluten free "Brownies" is sufficient reason for me to avoid ordering anything!!! It seems to be an easy option in too many cafes, from my experience in Ireland and abroad.

“Great cafe food in a lovely setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

This is a great spot in a historic part of Kilkenny. The food is all home cooked and the portions are very generous. Very good selection of vegetarian food as well (the lentil and nut loaf was delicious) and the desserts were outstanding. Highly recommended.
