“Server made the night”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

We had a fantastic night of great food, drink, and camaraderie at Lanigan's bar in Kilkenny, and it was first and foremost thanks to our server, whose name, if I recall correctly, was Anthony. (My apologies to him if it wasn't!) The food was fantastic. We wanted traditional Irish fare, and Anthony recommended the bacon and cabbage. Sure enough it was phenomenal. But what was really great was his contagious spirit and passion about all things Irish, especially hurling. He explained how the sport works, why it's so interesting, and what makes it so Irish. He even called his sister-in-law to come to the restaurant in the middle of the evening with two boxes of a children's hurling set when I expressed interest in giving one to each of my nephews. He was patient and forthcoming when we asked for general travel recommendations, which were all spot-on. The guy should be working for the town tourism board or as Irish ambassador to the U.N. His charm, enthusiasm, and expertise really made our stay in Kilkenny unforgettable. If you're in town, eat at Lanigan's and ask for Anthony.

“Nice pub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

I was there when the pub had live music and Irish dancers from the Lord of the Dance so it was a very cool experience, but if you are in a pub it's quite rude to just sit and enjoy the entertainment without buying food or drinks, in fact the owner kept checking to make sure people weren't just lingering without giving some business which is understandable. If you are in Ireland get the veg soup in a pub, it is SO good and super cheap, I've never found a recipe to replicate it.

“Nice place, good food good beer.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013 via mobile

Went here last night for a beer and ended up eating as well. We had the steak and prongs as well as a steak burger. Both were good, steak was better. Garlic cheese bread was really good.
First time I've tried the Kilkenny beer and I will definitely drink it again.
They were having music last night however we didn't get to stay for that unfortunately.

“Loved this place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

Went here on a Sunday night. Great lively atmosphere. Excellent live music. The bar service was very good and I was very happy they had Absolute Vodka (seems a rare thing to find at the bars I visited in Ireland). They were playing a Hurling match on the TVs (possibly a rebroadcast) while the band played. The manager was fantastic. He brought the Hurling Championship Cup around for us to check out and take pictures. When I told him I didn’t know much about Hurling, he brought my husband and I upstairs to Legends Hurling Bar. Legends was closed at the time, but he showed us all of the beautifully hand painted murals and photos of players on the wall. He told us a great deal about the game and obviously had a great passion for the game. Good times, great bar, great hospitality!
