This place has a great location however the owners are very rude once they have your money they seem to count down to time until u leave

Stayed there in September with my wife for our first time in killkenny and it ruined our trip

Breakfast time was a disaster the owners barely smiled at each other let alone the guesst the food was cold and my wifes cereal was stale

We dont often get away from our 4 kids often and when we do we enjoy an extra hour in bed following breakfast however on our way back up the stairs we asked what time was check out to be told 10.30 we were not told this upon check in

Once we checked out we had to wait 20 mins for the owner to let us out of the car park

This B&B is not the place to go if you are a respectable person out with your friends for a get together. we are a small group of ladies aged from 25-29 with respectable jobs all in the public sector, we are well educated and respected people and in this B&B we were treated like louts and trouble makers, this B&B has no carpets, its all wooden floors so be aware that walking in stilettos or any noisy shoes is severely frowned upon by the owners, also, don't avail of their car park as once your car is parked there you wont be allowed to move it until you check out next day at 10.30am!!!!!
we had a great night in Kilkenny but our stay at the Celtic House has made some of our memories bad ones.

I took the advise from "Lonely Planet" that Celtic House would be a good place to stay, that the owner would be helpful and knew the city well. No so much. As I traveled around the country later in the week, I realized just how not so helpful they were. I needed help finding a place for the next night. Angela agreed to make a phone call or two for me, but charged me. She was the only one that did. From that point on, each time I needed to contact lodging for the next night, phone calls were made and there was no charge.

We stayed at the Celtic House B&B for 2 nights in September and were happily surprised at the quality of the accommodation. We had never stayed in a B&B before and weren't too sure what to expect or what the standard would be, but when we checked in, our room was nice and much better than what we imagined.

We arrived in Kilkenny in the early afternoon and found the directions that we'd been given were very confusing and really didn't help us find it. We contacted the proprietors who gave us great directions and we found it straight away.

(For those who are trying to find this place, turn at the street where "Matt the Miller's" pub is on the corner - at the edge of the bridge, opposite the river. Drive along this road for about 25metres, the river will be on your left. Turn right at the 2nd entry into the public library and follow the carpark around to the left. You'll then find the "slip road"/laneway - turn right up here until you reach the end. Turn left and you'll find Celtic House approximately 30metres on the right hand side of the road).

We booked a double room with ensuite, which was a great size. For those travelling with kids, this type of room would be fine - it had a double bed, single bed and a couch that also pulled out to a double bed. The ensuite was basic, but it was clean, the shower had good pressure and you weren't out in the hall sharing a bathroom with other guests. The only downside to this room was that it shared a wall with the communal bathroom and in the middle of the night, you could hear everything.....

The breakfast was great and the location was perfect - about 100metres from the main street and a quick walk to the shops and Kilkenny Castle.

If you're doing Kilkenny as part of a self drive tour, I would suggest that one night is plenty of time to stay, particularly if you arrive in the early afternoon. You can do Kilkenny Castle and St Canice's church and wander the cobblestoned streets in one day and have plenty of time to see Waterford etc along the way. We did discover the delights of probably the oldest pub in Ireland though - Kyteler's Inn. This Inn was built around the 13th century and has a fantastic history as a pub and a wonderful atmosphere. Highly recommend stopping here even if it's just for a quick pint!

The Celtic House has parking in the rear, however it's limited and is a first-come first-served basis. Be mindful too, that other guests will either block your car in, or require you to move yours to allow them to get out - and not always at a time convenient to you! You also have to remember that this is a B&B with guests of varying ages, who will come and go at all hours, clomping around on the hardwood floors.

Overall, we would definitely recommend a stay at Celtic House.

This B&B was ideally located on a quiet street within walking distance of all amenities, and with a secure carpark. On first impressions the room, with a double and twin bed, was OK but a little cramped, with a mish-mash of furniture and a very soft mattress. The room was located in the basement of an annex with very little air circulation which wasn't helped by the fact that we couldn't get the window open, so not really a comfortable nights sleep. The ensuite was clean and spacious with plenty of towels. There was however a fully equiped kitchen where we could help ourselves to tea/coffee. Breakfast was very basic, continental consisted of a choice of cereals, fruit and yoghurt which I never actually received, no breads available at the buffet table. My travelling companions had a full irish which looked apetising enough. Although the booking was accepted with a credit card, we had to pay cash which the owner said he told us about...he hadn't. Also the price of the room was more than what we had been quoted on booking. All in all, I didn't really enjoy my stay here, although I really can't fault the location.

I had a wonderful week in Kilkenny made more so by the comfortable and clean Celtic House on Michael Street where I was warmly welcomed by Sheila and John, friends of owners Angela and John Byrne who were away on holiday. Sheila and John looked after the B&B with such care and concern, one would think they owned it. They were lovely to chat with and Sheila was knowlegeable about the City and the surrounding area. The Celtic House is in an excellent location on a quiet street away from the noise and business of the town center, yet within easy walking distance of buses, phone boxes, internet cafes, restaurants, shopping, and attractions. I had a small room with a queen size bed, a TV , view of the castle, the thosel, and the catherdrals! The bed and pillows were comfortable, the bathroom was clean with plenty of towels. The common areas including the breakfast room were clean and attractively furnished. Breakfast choices include cereal and fresh fruit, juice, or a full Irish plate, coffee or tea.
I highly recommend this B&B, but do call ahead to avoid disappointment. It is a busy place and even in November, off season, it filled quickly.
