“Fantastic staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

We stayed here for one night, I had 2 children of 6 & 8 with me and I have to say when I drove past it I looked and thought oh no what have I done, It looks really old from outside, We found the carpark around the back and went in, From then on the stay couldnt have been better really. We had a lovely time, The food was delicious and portions were generous, the staff really couldnt do enough for us, My daughter was havnig great fun being a waitress to us :) the reception staff and bar staff were insistant they carry our bags to our rooms. Breakfast was lovely and cooked to order. The location was superb, right along the street with lots of nightlife. The place looks old but it is spotless clean and nice and warm too

Stayed here during a stag party. The staff were easy going and the place itself has a nice old fashion charm. rooms were warm and the bar was grand. It is located a 2 minute walk from the centre and would recommend it. It was quiet and even with people singing in the bar, I didn't hear a thing. the fry in the morning was great too.

I would agree with the last reviewer the hotel is not reaching its full potential. This hotel is in a great location, close to the shops, close to the castle and offers free parking to the rear of the hotel. However the hotel lets itself down inside. They charge to much for the product that they are selling. Its not awful but its not great either. Everything just feels old.... The bar was lovely and big plenty of seating but again it just feels like it needs a good lick of paint and some new décor. The rooms were fine, nice size, bathrooms small bit outdated but functional. An attempt to update the rooms had been made with new carpets and curtains. Plus the weekend I visited the hotel had had a fire the day before so the smell of smoke around reception area which was awful, the carpets were wet and really I would have to question if it should have be open so quickly again. The restaurant was closed and the kitchen also. Breakfast was fine, staff were very friendly and helpful. Its a fine hotel for the Hen/Stag party trade.

Stayed for 2 nights with my boyfriend and we found the location great! Within walking distance of all major sights and shops. Although the hotel advertises as a vintage hotel, parts of it just seems mismatched, tacky and broke. Main areas like reception, breakfast dining room and adjacent bar/lounge live up to the vintage experience but the corridors and rooms are just mismatched and outdated. The room was uncomfortable as the double bed was two single beds pushed together, the toilet seat was broken, the duvet cover did not fit in the sheet and walls are very thin. Could hear a baby screaming from next door. Also dirty in some places. Our room overlooked the car park and it is quite loud. Breakfast was fab! Lacking products as the only buffet products are cereals and yogurts, everything else is to be ordered but really lovely tea and food. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful and once you get by the bad points in the room the hotel becomes more enjoyable.

Room Tip: Do not choose a room overlooking car park

The club house is an old fashioned hotel but it servers it's purpose myself and two friends stayed here in October the staff were friendly the food was good and it was very central to the pubs, restaurants and shops. There was no residents bar open when we got back from our night out which was disappointing. I would stay here again it's clean and we found it well priced but if I was looking for a romantic weekend away with my partner I would pick somewhere a bit more modern.

stayed here for 1 night to attend a birthday.on arrival we were checked in by a friendly staff member at desk.hotels décor was stuck in late 70s.furnishings and décor throughout are so dated it was unbelievable.our double room consisted of two single beds pushed together.room was of average size with bathroom and room furnishings very very old.wall paper was ripped in places with extension leads in room to make more power points available.toilet holder was of single sheets normally found in public toilets.towels were very old and over used.tea facilities were in a small locker with a small hairdryer.iron was to be found down the corridor stuck to the wall, prob there since 1960s.beds were uncomfortable with huge dips in middle need new matresses.Bar area is very small but service was prompt and staff were polite.restaurant area was average to large and food was nice.for price we payed we would not stay again and it did get new carpet down on one of the corridors but really is a hotel that could do with a SERIOUS lick of paint and some badly needed updating in the décor.

Room Tip: if looking to just throw the head down it would do the job but don't expect anymore.

Great place this.....appears a tad dated until you try it out and enjoy it.
Food is actually top class with a lot more invention and style than you would expect from a "period" hotel. Value is excellent and service is also. Rooms are perfectly adequate and B/B rates very fair. Location scores big time as it's in the centre of everything....it's own bar is great for a group.

Room Tip: rear car park is a little difficult to find
