“Great location but a little run-down.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

We got this hotel at a bargain rate, and for what we paid it was good value. It's in a great location in the centre of Tralee town, and has limited free parking. The room was large and clean, but the doors of the other rooms on the corridor banged very loudly on closing. The reception staff were helpful, but the breakfast service was appalling, the worst I've every come across in a hotel. Tables were left uncleared and the waitresses moved at a snail's pace, despite the fact that they were not very busy. Also, the sausages were cheap and inedible. We noticed they were sent back uneaten form other tables, in addition to our own. All in all, you get what you pay for - if you buy this at a bargain price.

As a tourist guide with large groups I found the reception very helpful and organised. Problems of my guests where dealt with promptly. The reception and lobby looked great but once you enter the upper floor area you will notice that the place has had much better times. It is well past its best before date but ..clean,,and therefore not much one can say about it for the good or bad. The rooms are clean but well used and the bathrooms are fully functional. The bar is good and the friday entertainment acceptable. The restaurant in the bar does not look like it but if one likes fish than this is the place to eat. Dinner for large groups can be slow as not all staff seems to be trained.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the street as there is a little pub across the road which causes some noise

Went with a group . Had choice of bar or restaurant area alongside bar. Good choice of food. Shown to table promptly by a waiter. Of those serving he seemed the only one with experience. I choose a steak and before I could say my preference waitress said "I presume you want it well done". Maybe I looked like a well done person but far from it. All our food was reasonable but having steak I had to eat with an ordinary fork. Prob should have asked for steak knife . One of group wanted a second wine and I had to go to bar myself as no staff available. Place was not busy. When we were leaving again had to go to bar to pay. Person inside bar said she would have to get someone else to take money. Did not take long but maybe bill should have been available . Small problems but could be easily rectified with a little staff training .

I booked 2 nights in late July but was told the hotel was very overbooked and we could have only the 1st night with a move to the Carlton plus a dinner on either night for the 3 of us. a very fair gesture I thought. the receptionist was very young but lovely and rang the carlton to book the dinner for 2nd night. the hotel was busy with coach parties mostly French. the hotel is fine for a short stay the automatic lighting in the corridors take a little while to come on making it a bit gloomy. The room was clean but the bathroom was not. It had been cleaned but around all the taps and edges we rather dirty. for about 11 euro more go to the sister hotel The Carlton. we did not eat here due to the numbers in the hotel. It is very central with little car parking space available, locals use spaces up until about 6pm.

Room Tip: the are no views or advantages to all rooms All are the same

Nice reception area, friendly staff and ok breakfast. Rooms clean but very very dated. In need of refurbishment and modernisation. Ok for one night but would not like to be there for any longer. More suited to business overnighters than to tourists or holiday makers. Location very central.

Well, what can I say...The only things going for it is that it is Central to Tralee and I found the breakfast decent enough. It's all downhill after that I'm afraid.
The hotel is very very grubby and dark when you walk in. The receptionist wasn't too bad but seemed to be just going through the motions. We didn't think much of it, maybe she just had a long shift. Got in the lift to go to the room, it was appalling. Like it had never ever been cleaned and there was an awful smell in it along with plenty of stains. We went on to our room after getting off the lift, when we went in, it was a flashback to the early 90's. It's so outdated it's ridiculous. No hotel or local information here either like most hotels supply. The bathroom, while very spacious, is very old and dirty(The room we were in anyway) although the temperature from the shower was decent and constant. Another downside to OUR bathroom was the lick kept flickering, was light being in a lightning storm, Reception didn't seem to care about this problem. The branding in the Hotel seems to be a huge problem. Is it the Tralee Central or the Abbey Gate(the old name)? As mentioned in the title, the Carlton group bought this hotel recently but it's nowhere near the standard of the Carlton(Stayed in the Carlton, Tralee the week before). And the worst thing about our stay was the last thing(just aswell). My partner was charged twice. Once when checking in, and again when checking out. She was told this was normal as the the card was just taken the day before to authorise it. Still trying to get back the money owed. Overall, extremely disappointed with this Hotel. Wouldn't give it the 3 stars. It seriously needs a MAJOR overhaul. There is tourist busses outside this hotel every night of the week(I do business in Tralee so pass it often enough) so they surely have money to do the place up. It needs it. Just our opinion though, as other have suggested below they enjoyed it so each to their own but I won't be going back.

Room Tip: Ask for a front facing room. We had one at the back looking into people's gardens. No sleep due...

It was adequate for a nights stay. The bar and restaurant were not to our liking due to the hard rock background music. We had to park our bikes outside the hotel in any area reserved for tour buses. Unfortunately the pavement had lots of broken glass and we had to clean it up before parking. Having said that, the rooms were clean and roomy, and breakfast was adequate. We walked around the neighborhood, but couldn't find any restaurants, so had to put up with the music at the hotel.
