“Lovely stay in Ballygarry”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2012

We stayed here for one night last June. The room was lovely, the staff very nice, and we got a great deal. For work reasons we had travelled separately to Tralee, and the hotel allowed us to leave one car there for two nights as we went west for the weekend - which was greatly appreciated. The only downside was the location. The hotel is a little out of town, and the road into town is very busy, so walking into town to eat was not an option. Otherwise highly recommended.

What a lovely stay we had in Ballygarry House. We picked this hotel on the basis of its Tripadvisor reviews and were glad we did.

We were staying for 3 nights, so when we were given a room adjacent to the car park, we asked if there was any chance of a room on the garden side of the hotel. They moved us into a lovely first-floor room overlooking the picturesque garden (which is well worth a stroll in itself). Separate bathroom with shower in the bath and two sinks! The shower head was old, so the water power was coming and going a little bit, but otherwise it was very nice indeed.

The complimentary dressing-gowns and slippers were much appreciated too. As it was raining outside, we made use of the hotel's DVD service where they'll loan you a DVD player and a DVD of your choice - all at no cost.

The bedroom safe had a flat battery so wasn't working. We notified reception; they said it would be fixed that day, but it wasn't. We rang again the following morning - and a staff member had it fixed in 10 minutes.

We enjoyed the upstairs lounge too - lots of seating, free internet access (with printer), lamps for reading and a TV with a Playstation! The night porter opened the lounge for me at 12 midnight so I could relax and read for a while, which was greatly appreciated.

The hotel restaurant is of a high standard: spacious, warmly lit and most importantly, the food was superb. Only one complaint: we were on a package deal that included a dinner, so we were given the 'package' menu. In fairness to the hotel, the package menu is designed to look like the a la carte menu, so it's not obvious to others that you're there on a deal. But if other renowned four-stars (e.g. the Maryborough Hotel in Cork) can let people on a package deal order off the a la carte menu for no extra charge, why can't Ballygarry?

That aside, the restaurant turned out fantastic food for us all weekend; we tried different breakfasts each day and all of them were delicious (especially the smoked salmon and scrambled egg).

Ballygarry has an impressive spa too, which my wife tried out and really enjoyed. She found the massage treatment expensive and was hoping for a better standard for the cost, but she loved the outdoor hot-tub, sauna and steam room, all of which are complimentary to guests, and she came back fully chilled out.

All told - we'd highly recommend Ballygarry House for anyone passing through the Kingdom. Give it a try!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the garden side.

Dear DaveGalway,

Thank you for taking the time to write your detailed review. I am delighted to read your praise of Ballygarry House. During your stay guests can at any time choose to upgrade to the a la carte menu in our restaurant, but there are supplements attached to this as our accomodation packages are very competitively priced. I will pass your kind words on to all of our staff, and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to us again in the future.

Best wishes,
Padraig McGillicuddy

We stayed here for 2 weddings and enjoyed both stays thoroughly. The grounds are really beautiful and just perfect for a wedding....if you get the weather the drinks reception outside is just gorgeous. The food is excellent and the staff are all very helpful and friendly. The rooms are lovely. It is a bit pricey though and would be the only thing that might deter me from staying again. Overall, it really is a wonderful hotel.

A big thanks to all at Ballygarry for making our wedding day such a fantastic occasion. Helen was our main contact with Padraig, Thys and Cathal adding their assistance along the way. All of our guests were warmly welcomed by and catered to throughout their stay thanks to Elaine, Marieanne, Nicole, Maria and the team. Almost half of our guests travelled to Kerry and were delighted with the hospitality showed to them by the staff at the Ballygarry. the food was of the highest standard and the friendly service at the bar was well received, thanks to Brid, DJ and the rest of the bar staff. The hotels spa proved the perfect option to ease the tired muscles from all the dancing the night before! The positive feedback that we've received from family and friends adds to the wonderful memories of an exceptional day. Go raibh mile maith agat, Hope & Patrick

I went to Ballygarry House on a Spa break with some girls. The hotel is very welcoming and extremely comfortable. We ate there both night in the bar and restaurant, both meals were first class. The Spa is absolutely spectacular, the staff in there couldn't have been nicer. It was sheer luxury. Can't wait to go again.

We only got to spend one night in this hotel, but our short stay was indeed lovely. Full of amenities- the spa, the garden, the incredible bedroom/ bathroom- it was so posh. Even the lobby and the stairway leading to the second floor were grand! Everything was carefully planned and I truly appreciated the attention to detail they showed. It was the most traditionally luxurious room we'd had in Ireland.

The hotel is very close to center city Tralee, teeming with restaurants. Seemed as though most placess closed early, but there were still a few options later in the evening.
The staff was polite, but the only problem was we had a very early checkout and, because there was a problem with my credit card, we had to wait until the front desk staff came in at about 6am. to resolve the issue. But it was most definietly a great deal; one would expect to pay a lot more for such luxury.

It was a memorable experience and I would absolutely go back!

Room Tip: A room overlooking the expansive garden

Reception staff very nice and friendly. Room was very comfortable and spacious and dining room comfortable and food was good. However, attention to some areas of cleaning needed work. The bar area which serves more casual food options was very small and was crowded and the staff were under pressure to seat people. For such a large hotel this needs improvement. Food in the restaurant was very nice but at €40 for the set menu I thought it a bit pricey. Breakfast was very nice but there was no encouragement to take the irregular options of fish. We were not offered a menu for breakfast and only knew there were other options by studying the menu in the foyer before entering. We were there over the bank holiday weekend and there was no entertainment of any kind in the hotel. For Kerry, which is so into tourism, I thought this unusual. For a 4* hotel I would have expected better. Cannot fault the staff though, they were always courteous and kind but definitely no small talk from anyone other than the reception staff. Didn't use the spa so cannot comment on that.

Room Tip: We were at the front of hotel facing the main road but once you closed the windows it was perfectly...

Dear DCBunty,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review of your recent stay with us. I am glad to see that you were overall happy with your experience. We pride ourselves on our cleanliness, our staff and our food and to read that there were aspects of these that dissapointed you is unfortunate. As a destination for Spa breaks and restful stays we have found from previous experience that our Hotel guest enjoy the peace that our bar has to offer.

Kind regards,
