“Tired and worn”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2012 via mobile

Just returned from a one night stay at the hotel and thankfully it was only one night that we were staying for. Hotel was tired, felt run down and had a rather stale smell about it. The plus was that the waiting staff were good but in this instance this was outweighed by the many negatives...receptionist was cold and unfriendly, I hate been checked in by someone who answers the phone and pays no attention. We were put in a smoking room although we are non smokers and had to change rooms. The quality of food was poor and presentation was dated. Breakfast was one of the poorest I have encountered for a while. In short, they need to try harder and certainly will not be returning.

Staying at this hotel during The Rose of Tralee festival meant we were opposite the funfair which went on until about 2am but that didn't spoil our stay. The room was a good size and clean. The dinners were average, and not very well cooked. My seabream was horribly over cooked on the first night and the chicken on the second night was bearly cooked. Unfortunately the sea food cocktail made me ill. Breakfast was disappointing with the scrambled eggs very watery and no fresh fruit.

To begin an honest review, as a previous review stated .. I am left pondering who excactly wrote the good reviews for this hotel. Its hard to believe any visitor did so. Altho yes, it looks nice in the pictures advertised. The pool and gym facilities are a bonus. The front of the building looks favourable on arrival. And the the reception area precieves the hotel to be of high standard. However this is where the good ends .... abruptly!
Phoning beforehand we were told we could check in at 2.30. Arriving later than this we were then told our room was not even ready. The staff were cold, unhelpful and certainly did not make you feel like you were welcome. No smile, please or thank you to be seen. ( with the exception of 1 or 2 of the bar staff and the lady in sign in area to the pool) Upon been locked out at 11pm while going for a cigarette i was greeted with a blunt 'what do you want' whe the bell was rang. My girlfriend's greeting was a long wait before anyone even came.
Breakfast was a joke. Staff brought us to our seats but ommited to tell us it was self service. The food was of less quality than a petrol station deli. With the amount of staff running around with nothing to do you wonder why they couldnt serve the tables in the first place. Because of this we didnt even have breakfast on the second day. However we were then charged at check out for 2 extra breakfasts for a child who ate 1 bananna on the first day!!!
Dinner was also of low standard and high cost. A lasange that seemed like it had been repeatadly reheated in the microwave. When the fork finally penetrated the cheese, the plate would nearly lift with the rubbery platter. 17.80 for a steak accompanied by possibly 1 mushroom chopped and not much more onions on a plate where asthetic quality didn't exist.
The child's dinner of mash and beans was inedible. Its hard to ask a youngster to eat up something that you wouldnt give to your pet.
Rooms were outdated with a unsightly view of a shabby roof top and car park. Some serious work needed in a place full of potential. Particulary with staff's attitude.

Room Tip: Book one in a different hotel

The Brandon is a long-established hotel in a great location. It's clean but after several years of underinvestment, it has become outdated, drab and even a bit shabby in places.

The good
Excellent gym - large and as good as any dedicated gym with a good selection of cardio and weights machines, free weights and floor exercise mats
Pool
Very good location
Reasonably priced
Friendly, helpful staff
Large free car park to rear

The bad
In 2012, still no WiFi (except in reception area)
Many rooms small and in need of refurbishment
My room had no coffee making facilities (supplied on request)

I would still come back, but I wish they'd invest in WiFi - it's hardly a luxury these days and must be a real pain for foreigners who don't have 3G access in Ireland.

We have just returned from a 2night stay in The brandon in tralee. . I was expecting it to be better than it was. . on arrival they gave us a room at back of the hotel which was overlooking a dirty yard with rubbish thrown around and a view of gas bottles. . i immediatly went down to reception and requested to be moved which i was with out any problem . . this double room was very small and with no air conditioning it was that warm we had to ask for a fan to cool the room. .,The staff were excellent and couldnt do enough for us. . on our check out morning our room was entered by cleaning staff at 8.25am.This should be adressed as our check out time was not till 11am. I did say it at reception on leaving which the receptionist did say was wrong and she would check it out. .

This Hotel is a gem. Old but not aged, and a cosy place to stay. The Brandon offers a warm welcome to all who arrive. Room was ready and spotless as was the bathroom.
Breakfast was top class and on white linen too. Free parking, wifi, and staff are wonderful.
This hotel is not what some posts report as I was surprised to find and would recommend this Tralee hotel tp all.

Room Tip: Good very well run hotel you are made to feel welcom in.
