“Excellent family holiday!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2011

We have just arrived back from a 5 night stay at the Malton and we are delighted with our experience. What puts this hotel apart from other 4 star hotels is the quality of its staff, in particular Tomas, our waiter on several days, who was very pleasant and efficient and Mary who we found to be very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Indeed she appears to be everywhere at once, whether ensuring that "Big Cook Little Cook" ran on time or organising a large group of guests to take jaunting car rides (delegating the job of giving bread bags to feed the ducks, to some of the bigger children to distribute to smaller children, who were delighted with the responsibility). Even though the hotel was very busy, Mary took the time to go from table to table daily, talking to guests - indeed on her one day off, our son enquired "Where is Mary?" at dinner time! There are a range of complimentary child friendly activities provided - some mentioned above but we must say that one of the highlights for our children (aged 5 and 8) was Mike the Magician who performed a very funny, age appropriate, hour long show ("the best best best ever" !)
Killarney has lots to do and two family activities were included in our package - we chose the Inisfallen boat trip and the Muckross farms - the latter very enjoyable due to the wide range of small animals available to be petted and thanks to the man in charge who came over to notify us, the kids were just in time to see the piglets being fed.
Staff in the leisure centre were also very good - there was a group of older boys jumping into the pool today and trying to use the jacuzzi and steam room and this was dealt with swiftly and efficiently.
Our interconnecting rooms were very clean and comfortable and we had a view of the gardens. For a hotel in the middle of Killarney, the Malton is an oasis of calm - we heard no traffic noise.
Breakfast is very good - the Innocent Smoothies for the kids were a nice touch.
Families can eat together in the main dining room at night which we were delighted to avail of.
All in all, this was a very positive experience for us and we will certainly be back!

We spent three nights at the Malton in July. It was a perfect oasis slap bang in the middle of Killarney. We took a family room for ourselves and our two kids, with my elderly parents in another room close by. The kids' beds were proper single beds, not foldups, and all beds were extremely comfortable. The bathroom was well kitted out, and really good quality toiletries were supplied. The communal areas such as the library and reading room were great places to spend some time, and even though the hotel was full, it never seemed crowded. The swimming pool was bright and clean and at least in the early evenings never too busy. The best thing about the hotel was the staff. They always met you with a friendly smile and greeting, offered helpful advice for things to do etc. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The only single complaint I would have is that the bar food is all served at very low tables, which is a shame as it's great food but this set up was not very suitable for everyone. Other than that, would thoroughly recommend the Malton.

Stayed in the apartments, very comfortable. Family, 3kids under 6. Hotel had a kids club from 6-9 which was very handy. Plent to see and do. Very friendly staff. Only slight concern was the main restaurant in hotel is pretty plush so not great for kids

My family and I recently stayed at The Malton and had an absolutely fabulous experience. We arrived at the hotel after a long overnight flight from the states and another long and arduous drive through the country side of Ireland. Well it was worth the trip. Our rooms were ready even though we arrived before check-in, the staff was so gracious and accommodating helping us with questions about where to purchase cell phones, where to have Tea (right in the hotel it is wonderful) and helping us make arrangements for tours. All throughout our stay the staff went up and above to make us feel at home. The service was so good that we actually felt like The Malton was our home and when it came time to leave we really didn’t want to go.

The room accommodations are extremely comfortable with a lovely old world charm that made our stay even more memorable. We had a total of 3 separate rooms and each was slightly different. Large wardrobes, roomy bathrooms and all the necessities such as hairdryer and iron are available along with super comfy bedding. Our rooms had pretty views of various courtyards and fountains which added to the appeal.

We did not get to partake in all the activities offered at the hotel but I have to say the children’s programming in the evening is great. We had a 6 year old in our party and she really enjoyed the activities. On one of the nights a staff member recognized her from the previous night and stopped into the sitting room we were in to ask her if she was coming to the children’s activities. We would have forgotten had it not been for the observant staff member.

I don’t want to forget a word about the food. It was delicious! The breakfast was fabulous and there were even options to order a la carte service if the traditional hot continental wasn’t enough (for us it was just perfect). The Afternoon Tea is a real treat so we had it twice. The seating in the bar and the small rooms off the bar area are perfect for lounging and snacking after a long day of sightseeing or shopping.

The hotel itself is located steps from the town of Killarney. Walking out the front door of the hotel you see the Jaunting Carriages which you can take on trips to Muckross House or Ross Castle. Around the corner are the wonderful shops and pubs of the town. If you are looking for a hotel with location, location, location, then The Malton is it.

During our trip to Ireland we stayed at a total of 6 hotels and The Malton was by and far the favorite of every single family member (including the 6 year old). The entire trip we kept saying that The Malton spoiled us and the other hotels just couldn’t live up to The Malton’s standards. Our stay was so good that we are already planning to go back in 2 years and stay at The Malton for at least 1 week. After all you can’t stay away from home for too long!

Built in 1854 and renovated in 2008, this hotel has a total of 180 bedrooms spread over 4 floors and sprawling buildings. Which of the rooms you get will determine your experience. We were in the old part of the hotel and it was lovely, reminiscent of a bygone era. The main reception area is very welcoming and warm. The library provides a place to meet up with friends, as does the bar. The buffet breakfast is a high point and there were many people from outside the hotel taking advantage of it on a Sunday morning. We were with a large group on a multiple day event and it was great fun and well managed.

People staying in the "new section" were a bit less impressed. There is a strange flow to parts of the hotel. The pool for example, is on the other side of a glass enclosed walkway that leads to the large ballrooms. So swimmers in bathing suits were walking past a bride and groom doing their photo shoot in the glass enclosure. All in good fun!

Room Tip: Ask for rooms in the original part of the hotel.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for three nights in mid May. Location is excellent especially if, like us, you're arriving by train. Check in was very efficient. We didn't expect our room to be ready at 11.30 am but they said it was. We were astounded when we eventually found our room. It was in the more modern part of the hotel. It had aluminum windows, old and scratched furniture (not antique!), stains on the walls and carpet, mould in the bathroom, plaster peeling off..... Overall it needed major updating and was definitely nowhere near four star standard. I loathe to complain but felt that in this case it was necessary. The lady at reception didnt appear too pushed about our complaint but called back eventually and told us to come down to reception. On our way down to reception we met another lady (manager?) who asked if we were okay and when we explained the problem to her she called another person and asked him to sort out another room for us. However, the manner in which this was done made us feel like troublesome children or that we were chancing our arm looking for an upgrade even though we had booked a deluxe room! Eventually we were brought to another room that was in the old part of the hotel and which was much nicer.
However this whole experience spoiled my stay there. Why were we originally given the room we were when there were better rooms obviously available? Why were we made to feel so bad for asking to change?
The Malton definitely has to work on how it treats guests. On the plus side the dining room was lovely and the breakfast was fine.

Dear Silena,
Thank you for taking the time to write your recent review, I am disappointed to read your comments about your poor experience from two parts. The bedroom you were allocated certainly as you described will require a serious change to the whole room. We have been carrying out a large amount of refurbishing work over the last number of years and we will continue with this programme over the coming months and years. It is vital for the Malton guests to experience the very best of what the Malton has to offer.
The Malton has a great asset which is the staff of the hotel who regularly carry out their duties to the highest level and I am very dissatisfied as you are with the way your request to change bedrooms was handled. I will be addressing this with the team at the front desk as it is important that all included are aware of the poor level that they had provided during your stay.
I feel that this was an isolated issue and we will continue to work to the highest level in order for all guests to enjoy the Malton experience.
I would be delighted to speak to you if you have the opportunity to contact me at your leisure over the coming days.
Regards,
Paul O’Sullivan

The location of the Malton is just perfect for Killarney, steps from the rail station and steps from the fun of Killarney. You can walk everywhere from here. The hotel has an amazing ability to absorb people. It seems like it is very quiet but when you come down to breakfast, you know why they have such a big dining room. The hotel has lots of sitting areas, nooks and crannies to relax in. And amazingly for a hotel in the town, it also has six acres of lovely gardens, see if you can find the kitchen garden. We were there for Ladies Day at Kilarney Races and it was a brilliant event. The hotel organised it really well, and we ladies had a ball. From the hair and make up appointments in Sean Taaffe's Salon, to coaching to the course and delicious supper afterwards, the whole day was perfect, despite the odd shower. The singers, Frankly Buble were terrific and had us all up dancing. We were in need of the comfortable beds. .

Room Tip: We had a room in the newer section of the hotel and it was vey comfortable and quiet.
