“Terrifying nightime experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2008

I would not recommend particularly for single girls that this is a good place to stay while in Killarney. On returning to the hostel in the evening, an absolutely bizarre night watchmen followed us to our room and said he was going to wait until we went to sleep and then come in and get us. We were extremely frightened and had to phone the police to get him away from us. To make matters worse, a surly manager was completely disinterested in our ordeal and dismissed it as "lies".

I would suggest sleeping somewhere you won't be stalked and threatened with violence in the middle of the night.

Please be advised that in relation to the above review the guest was disruptive on the night in question and it was the Hostel night porter who had to call the police to deal with the situation. It was handled in a professional and efficient manner. All our staff are focused on customer service and trained to be courteous and polite at all times.

Railway Hostel is a very good choice for people who want to save some money.Accomondation in Killarney is rediculously expensive, and I think even people not used to stay in hostels, will be happy to try this particular hostel. Location is great, rooms and public areas are extremely clean and staff is vey friendly. They are more that willing to help arrange tours at the area's attraction (they pick you up from hostel),booking taxi's, reccomnd places to eat etc. Rooms are fine for a hostel, a bit at the small side, but that's what you expect from a hostel anyway. Showers have always hot water and are quite spacey. (There are power buttons in dorms' showers, but not in private rooms' showers). Light breakfast is included in the price. Maybe the best hostel I've stayed to in Ireland so far.

The Railway hostel is situated in a lane off of one of the main streets in Killarney. We opted for a four bed (there were three of us) en suite room and stayed for four nights. There were no serious problems with the hostel, but I would like to make the following observations.

1) The room was quite small for four people (I stayed in a hostel in Poland in November where the room was much bigger)

2) The top bunkbed's mattress was very hard (quite difficult to sleep on this one)

3) The hostel charge for internet access

4) The breakfast is very basic (toast/ cereal/ coffee)

  • Liked — Very near Killarney and off the main road (so no traffic noise)
  • Disliked — Small room

This hostel seemed more like a halfway house to me. There were probably about 10 people staying there in the winter when we stayed there and of those people, there were 3 really creepy old men who seemed to have mental problems, a teenager who got kicked out of his house and his parents dropped him off, some hippies, and a few very very smelly backpackers. The staff was great and very helpful, but I think they should use a little more common sense when opening their doors to guests. The sheets were not clean, and smelled like teenagers who don't shower but use tons of body spray slept in both our beds. This hostel was completely safe, and the purpose of a hostel is just a cheap bed anyway, right?

Railway Hostel is a 3-minute walk from the bus station, located right next to a lovely church, and a 5-minute walk to the city centre.

We spent three nights there, and we could not rave enough about the staff. They were incredibly accommodating, and I am sorry I have forgotten their names, as they were wonderful. They helped us in our tour bookings, as you were able to book everything right there, and they also helped us make our reservations for our next hostel, which proved to be a little more complicated than we had expected. Even though we went back to the staff several times with questions, they were always extremely friendly and polite.

The room we got (a 10-bed dorm named Oyster), felt like a chalet. The bunk beds were wooden and cosy. The showers were push button, but the water temperature was perfect, which was a first on our travels in Ireland (it's usually scorching, or too cold).

Kitchen was big, but there is NO oven, only gas burners and a microwave. Just plan ahead and do not buy food that need to go in the oven. We met really friendly people over there, and the hostel is reall comfortable and not overly crowded. You feel at ease wandering around the TV room or just chatting with your fellow backpackers.

For 5 Euros, your laundry is also washed, dried and folded. I'm telling, this is the place to stay at in Killarney. Don't hesitate to book Railway.

We stayed in a double room with ensuite (50 euros). Note that the themed rooms are not actually themed inside - they're just titled eg. The Chimp Room.

Room - big for a hostel, lots of room for luggage, bathroom was small but clean, comfortable bed.

Breakfast - typical self-serve toast and cereal backpacker style breakfast. Reasonable for the price.

Facilities/atmosphere - has a big kitchen and common area for socialising.

Location - very close to town - everything needed was within walking distance of the hostel. Large Tesco close by.

Parking - limited on-premises parking available - cannot park elsewhere lest you be towed.
