“A lovely old country house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2014

It's not easy planning a driving tour of Ireland for 14, when you know a good location, a great meal and secure parking is required. Any we were very pleased with the Cahernane House, although the rooms looked slightly tired they were comfortable and spacious and we had an excellent dinner and full Irish for breakfast - all served with fresh local produce.
A very good location to stay when visiting the area.

At the end of a tree-lined lane, you know Cahernane House will be a great place to stay. Our room opened to a balcony overlooking a pasture of sheep and cows. The room was large and comfortable. Excellent breakfast. Cozy public rooms. Great restaurant. We spent three nights using the Cahernane House as our staging point for western Ireland.

We really enjoyed our stay at Cahernane House Hotel in Killarney. The staff were really efficient, friendly and just make you feel so welcome and at home.
The rooms are lovely, decorated to a high standard and the hotel while busy with guests it was quiet at night - which we love. The bar was welcoming and guests chatted about their day (its a kind of intimate setting), yet you could bury yourself in a corner with a book and a glass of wine and be quite happy. Lots or rooms to sit back and relax in, including the conservatory. Its a lovely relaxing break away with beautiful gardens to sit outside.
Cahernane's excellent rating is down to its food. Breakfast both days was superb; fresh local ingredients and all hot courses were made to order. From the eggs from their own hens, to the home made porridge, breads and preserves it is hard to find a fault. We had dinner in the bar on Friday night and the quality and food choice is way superior to bar food in many 5 star establishments. The crowning glory was dinner in the Herbert Room on Saturday night! This wasn't our first visit to the restaurant for dinner and it certainly won't be our last - again everything is prepared by the chefs on site - a range of savory breads are made, chutneys, ice creams and sorbets - if they can make it there the do - this is a true testament to a head chef that clearly has a passion for food and amazing skill. Somewhat of a hidden gem - I almost think I should keep it my secret!

Room Tip: Wifi I think was only available in the library - but it was free! This hotel is well in off the mai...

We stayed two nights at Cahernane. The building and property are beautiful. It is a lovely old home that has been added on with a new wing and solarium room.
We liked the fact that the property was not in the main areas of Killarney, so it would be quiet. And it was, except for a mooing cow here and there.

The house is in need of some refurbishment. You can see cracks in the wall and peeling wallpaper in many areas. You expect to see that in an older place, but when it gets to a certain degree, something must be done.
We stayed in one of the older rooms on the third floor and it was quite large, but the room itself was tired and dated. The moldings and shabbily painted and some were loosening. The television was a small unit and was on a little table on the floor. You couldn't see the screen from the bed because it was so low. Not a big deal for us as we weren't watching anyway.
The decor was very dated. It could be very lovely with refurbishment. The bathroom, however, was up to date. Very nice hot water shower.
The biggest gripe we had was lack of wifi in the rooms. We were told that they were working to have that installed very soon. The wifi in the lobby wash't that great.
In this day, there is no reason for not having good wifi. We were in a hut on a remote island in Thailand and had great wifi, so we aren't being too picky. We know it can be done.

Another thing we noticed was lack of general cleanliness in the main areas. There is a lovely sitting room off the main lobby and there was a huge cobweb in the beautiful window. There is absolutely no reason for a cobweb to be there. We never saw anyone cleaning the place. Just a few maids in the halls when passing the rooms, but nobody wiping or polishing anything in the common areas.

The elevator for some reason didn't let you select more than one floor so if you were sharing with other parties you had to wait for them to get off before selecting your floor. Don't know if that is just a characteristic of an old elevator or something needs to be fixed. Only a slight inconvenience.

Now, for the good.... the breakfast is tasty and in a nice setting in the main dining room. We had dinner one night in the dining room as it was included in our package and it was very good. Better than we expected.

The service was good and very friendly. No complaints there.

The solarium room is decorated with wicker cabana sofas, which seemed out of place in an older charming manor house.

Not a bad stay, just not as good as it could and should be. The newer wing rooms are probably a lot nicer, but the older part and the main rooms could use some TLC. If they put some money into the place and spruce up the decor and tidy it up, it could be really fabulous.

We arrived in the early evening and were met by a very gracious hostess. Our room was in the original part of the house and was huge with a gorgeous view of the gardens and mountains of Killarney National Park. The jetted tub was great for soothing tired muscles and the heated towels and floors added a nice touch. We choose to eat in the bar and it was a relaxing and delicious experience. The bartender recommended a great wine and was very attentive throughout our meal. After dinner, we enjoyed sitting outside in the back garden and visiting with other guest and enjoying the view. If you are looking for an elegant hotel with charm and history, this is the place for you. If we had known how great it would be, we would have booked a longer stay.

Room Tip: We had room 14 on the second floor and the views cannot be beat!

This was a hotel we were looking forward to. Upon arrival we were met with open arms by the receptionist, who check us in and than took us to our room. Our room was in the original part of the house, which we wanted. After a maze like passage to our room we were greeted with a very large room that contained a couch, two chairs, a desk as well as the bed. This room was huge and we had veiws from two walls, as we were on the corner. Our room number was 18. the bathroom was huge as well. The lighting could have been a little better over the sink, but it was not that big of an issue.

The breakfast room/service and food was excellent as well.

The Cellar bar was nice and cozy. We ate dinner there that was excellent and had a night cap.

The WiFi is flaky and offered only in the lobby area. As more people attempted to use it, it would slow way down.

The hotel itself and its grounds are showing it's age, but it does not detract from our stay.

Recommend to all to stay here for a wonderful evening. Thanks You!

Cahernane is a lovely old hotel! It's not as polished as some but suited us to a T. The reception and staff were wonderful. The oatmeal at breakfast was the best ever, dinner was very nice and the Cellar Bar was perfect for a night cap. We loved using one of the salons for a quiet visit by the fire. The grounds in this quiet setting are really beautiful. Enjoy!
