We spent a great night in Killarney Park Hotel. We were very impressed with the level of service, from booking, to arrival, food and departure. The staff are fantastic, arranging our dinner reservations, lunch, spa treatments easily.
The food in the restaurant and bar is very high standard. I had dover sole, it was expertly deboned at the table for me and delicious. husband had steak, cooked very well. Starters were also very tasty. Breads were homemade, sommelier was very helpful. The pianist in the restuarant is very good, not too loud, and they orientate all the tables for two so that you can see the piano and the wine cellar. Nice touch. All the staff (and there are LOADS of them, you never need to wait for anything) wear flat rubber soled shoes, so they almost fly around soundlessly.
The rooms on the ground floor were lovely for relaxing, a billards room, library, a few sitting rooms with roaring fires and newspapers available. The bathrooms in the downstairs areas nearly deserve a mention on their own. Provided with dental floss, mouthwash, cotton buds, little plasters, deodarants... Great touches. Nicely lit and beautifully tiled.
Our bedroom was large, with great amenities. Conditioner provided (a rariety in irish hotels!), along with nice quality soap and handcreams. Hairdryer was provided. Bed was huge size. We found the bedroom very hot howeveer, despite the climate control available. We set it to Cool only, but it never got much cooler.
Next morning breakfast could not be faulted. Excellent quality cooked breakfast, not greasy. And a vast buffet. Six juices, we only had orange, but it was freshly squeezed, 4 types of pastries, a huge array of fruit, dried and fresh. seeds, olives, carved ham, smoked salmon. Bread was home baked. Cheeses, yoghurts, cereals. Tea was in a lovely silver pot, real tea leaves, poured through a strainer.
We went to the spa after breakfast. This is possibly the only place I could see possible improvment in the hotel. The relaxation room is not particularly relaxing, the fish in the fish tank seem to be attacking eachother viciously! The treatment rooms are cluttered. My therapist was very good, as was my husbands, except for a botched nail polish. It was a pretty bad job, most of my nails covered in little bubbles under the polish. When we were leaving I mentioned this and asked for the polish to be removed. The receptionist told me my therapist was not available for another two hours. I said we were leaving before this time, after lunch, i didn't need it reapplied, and was there anyone there who could just take it off. She said no, and proceeded to bill me full price for it. Wasn't too happy with this, but I think it just reflects on the spa rather than the hotel.
We took a look at the swimming pool facilities, they are excellent. Nice size pool, although deepest part is 5ft. jacuzzi, bubble pool with little waterfall, plungepool and sauna. The hotel reception had phoned as well to let us know we had forgotten a coat in our room. Very good of them.
We had a quick lunch in the bar, sandwiches and soup. Both lovely. The club sandwich is warm bread, warm chicken with bacon and salad. Comes with chips. It's a huge meal.
All in all, we had a lovely weekend. we would return, although not to the spa.
