We have been on "holiday" for about 2 weeks with a group of 24 from the US. When we pulled up in the tour bus, I immediately thought of the beautiful, stately hotels in San Francisco with the granite facades and doormen in front. The interior, however, was a bit different but it has a classy feel to it. Our room was on the corner of the 5th floor and a beauty! Don't come here expecting a new, modern room but it was lovely! Our room had a king bed that looked like a full sized in this large room with a game table and 4 chairs, sofa, 2 easy chairs, a desk and several occasional tables and that was just the living area! The entry hall also had a desk (that's where we found the hair dryer!) and a large cabinet used for a closet. The furnishings were more of an antique quality but the bathroom had obviously been re-done fairly recently because it was modern. The double sinks had ample room for our needs and the shower was wonderful. Being on a corner also meant having a window for wonderful light -- something I have found lacking in the hotels during our visit.
I think the highlight of our stay was on our last night when I sat in bed writing in my journal (10-11PM) and looked out the windows to see a gorgeous sunset that lasted for a good hour. The sky glowed a beautiful golden tone and the buildings in the square were lit in green and blue. What a sight! We were in room 518 which faced the street so we DID encounter some noise on Saturday night but ear plugs did the trick! The Irish students have fun on the weekends! Our friends were in 519 and faced the Aran Islands but also the back side of some less than pretty buildings. They did not have the noise we had so I suppose either one had it's good and bad points.
The location is fantastic! Easy walking to lots of shops and restaurants.
The hotel bar food was so-so but the breakfasts and dinners we had in the main dining area were quite good. The hotel staff is wonderful, and the hostess (possibly the manager?) of the restaurant was a delight. She and her staff did all they could to make our group very happy and well fed!
5th floor is awesome! Request a corner room if you can get one. They are huge. They are old but have...
