I stayed at the Meyrick recently and I must say it was one of the worst hotel experiences I have had anywhere in the world.
Definitely not value for money for a hotel claiming to be 4 star and part of the Monogram group. For a start the room was very small and there seemed to be no soundproofing as the noise from Eyre Square at night was atrocious, there seemed to be a draft coming in from the old windows also. The bathroom had paint coming off the ceiling and the sink wouldn’t drain properly.
I also think the new bar is not a patch on the old one but in general the new surroundings are quite comfortable.
The dinner however was one of my worst experiences ever in a dining room. For a start we were put in a dreadfull seat close to where they were cleaning off plates, we eventually got moved to a nice table however the service was dire. The dining room itself is however nicely decorated. We ordered the set menu and wine, we got the starters within minutes but did not receive the wine until at least 30 minutes after the starter and after prompting the staff several times. The starter and main course were what you would expect in a country hotel from the 1980’s, the beef was precooked, prawn cocktail with a frozen prawns, a carvery in one of the local pubs would have been much better. In the end we even got charged for a €50 bottle of wine that we hadn’t ordered! The restaurant manager was running around opening bottles of wine without regard for the dire service on show, surely any management in the hotel if they sat down for one evening in the restaurant and observed the service and tasted the food would not permit this attempt at dining to be allowed.
The breakfast next day was a bit better but still not what you would expect from a 4 star hotel.
Overall I must say its in a great location, the lounge is comfortable and it still retains an old world feel but it needs to change now!
