I recently enjoyed a weekend at the newly refurbished Hotel Meyrick in Eyre Square, Galway. Although there weren't many negative aspects of my stay, i feel i must comment on the decor of the hotel firstly. The Hotel Meyrick is the revamped Great Southern Hotel. Having stayed at the hotel in its old incarnation, i am familiar with both the current and previous state of the hotel. The Great Southern was luxurious, old-world, warm and welcoming. At first glance, the Hotel Meyrick is characterless and devoid of any originality. The hotel foyer is dark, and obviously attempting a minimalistic, modern look. Any one who is familiar with the Great Southern Hotel will be surprised at the change. The beautiful antique furniture has been replaced by uncomfortable modern pieces. Trendiness has definitely been favoured over opulence and comfort. The second negative is the location of the reception desk, it is hidden behind a wall of, you've guessed it, yet more black! I have never been to a hotel where the reception desk is not the first thing you see when you enter!!!
Now to the positives, after finally locating the check-in desk, my husband and i were greeted by a very friendly and well-informed receptionist Aoife. Although there were quite a number of people checking in at the time, she remained courteous and efficient, a good start. We were a little startled that the porter parking our car looked so young but he good-humouredly assured us that he was in fact 18 so no worries there either.
We had booked a suite and we were not disappointed. The room was spacious and comfortable. The bath and shower facilities were also first class. I would like to point out though that the guest book in the room gave the details for the Great Southern. Perhaps, the Hotel Meyrick would like to update this, seeing that they've updated everything else!!!!
We ate in the hotel restaurant on our first night. Dinner was sufficient although not spectacular. This may be due to the fact there were a number of large parties in there at the time. Our waitress Aoife was extremely attentive and professional as was the manager Peter. Breakfast is a little below standard for a 4* hotel, and the staff looked a little bit harassed.
The bar at the Hotel Meyrick has also undergone a drastic transformation. Once again, the beautiful antique bar has been removed in favour of yet more trendiness but i guess that's how the new owners like it!!! The bar was very busy on both of our nights there but the staff were on top of things. Our waitress Marie was chatty and friendly and made a wonderful cosmopolitan. We also visited the downstairs bar but found it quiet and a little bit pretentious to be honest.
I hate to finish on another negative but where is the swimming pool?? Why would a hotel want to remove a pool, i don't really understand it. Surely a pool is an addition to any hotel.
All in all, it was a good experience. The location is first class but if you are familiar with the old Great Southern Hotel and are expecting more of the same then prepare to be disappointed. It has been refurbished to within an inch of its life, and not for the better, i'm afraid. However, if it's attentive service and prime location you're looking for, then the Hotel Meyrick might just be the place for you.
