“Best B&B in Ireland!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2012

My girlfriend and I stayed with Russ & Emer on our week long trip to Ireland in April 2011. We spent eight nights total in Ireland, three of them in Galway with Russ. Looking back at the trip, we should have spent more nights in Galway with Russ. It was just an amazing experience. The house is beautiful, right next to the center of Galway and just what a fantastic home run by Russ & Emer. As soon as we walked in, we felt like we were home. The rooms were very cute, all with personal bathrooms. Russ really made a great effort to make you feel at home and make sure you are having the best time possible. He will recommend restaurants, pubs, things to do and even make sure you get there as easily as possible. One restaurant he recommended that I CANNOT recommend enough would be Ard Bia at Nemmos. What an amazing place to eat dinner. We happened to be in Galway on Good Friday, where everything closes which was really unfortunate. But Russ helped us not only find an open restaurant, but find one that was still serving wine. One one of our days there he helped us find a place nearby for horseback riding, which turned into one of the coolest experiences in Ireland. Another highlight of our time there was the breakfast. You had an option between three or four delicious options, all of which were fantastically cooked.

I cannot recommend the Kilcullen House enough. If/when we return to Ireland, we will absolutely make sure to go to Galway again and to stay with Russ.

We Spent two nights in Galway and at Kilcullen's house. Russell is an amazing guest and very knowledgable about Galway. Ask him for advice on where to eat or what to do about Galway. His recommendations were great. Specially about dinner he help us to make reservations. Breakfast was very good and rooms are clean and spacious. Kilcullen's House is located within 5 minutes walking from Galway's Main street.

My daughter and I stayed with Russel and Emer on our trip through Dublin and West Ireland. They made us feel very much at home and comfortable from our arrival. The rooms, and beds, are comfortable, the breakfast excellent and we got some great tips on where to eat and hear a bit of music. The rooms are a bit small by American standards, but fairly normal for European B&B's. There is a comfortable sitting room downstairs with tea and fixings if we needed more space. This was my daughter's favorite B&B because of the good 'feel' of the house and Emer and Russel's comfy decor and welcoming manner.

My dad and I were touring the West of Ireland and actually had Kilcullen House recommended to us by the owners of the B&B next door. Rather than merely being your run-of-the-mill "traditional" B&B, Emer and Russell offer great hospitality and a beautiful, updated place to stay. This place truly has everything -- a great location in 5-10 minutes' walking distance of city centre, a warm welcome, great recommendations for food, drink, and shopping, dependable WiFi, coffee, tea, and biscuits, and a delicious breakfast. My only complaint is that we were only in Galway for one night!

We stayed at Kilcullen House over St. Paddy's weekend and had a fabulous stay. I'll be honest and say, yes the rooms are a bit small. And the bathrooms are even smaller. But, what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. Upon checking in you are given a map of the Galway area and recommended places to eat and drink. We in fact ate at three of the places and would also recommend those. Especially Ard Bia; still can't believe we were able to get into that place. Fantastic. There is free parking in the back. A big bonus since when we first showed up we didn't know and had a hard time parking out front. The B&B has a lot of character with original artwork in the building. Breakfast is fantastic. A nice sideboard selection and a choice of main meals; Irish breakfast, French toast, or vegetarian. I was very fond of the french toast. I love that they give you your coffee in a French Press. Just like home. The owners were very friendly. One of things we had planned for the trip was a drive up to the Connemara. I had done some research before leaving, even printed up some maps but, Russel suggested a great route in which we followed. It was one of the highlights of the trip. The location was great. Maybe 10 minutes to the center of town. And just behind the B&B were restaurants and pubs. There was even a grocery store right across the street. Never had a problem with noise. We were towards the back of the building. Oh, and then there were the cookies. I'll admit to having at least one every day. Yum.

My partner and I stayed at Kilcullen House over St Patrick’s weekend in March 2012. I can’t speak positively enough about Kilcullen House, in particular the owners, Russell and Emer. Our flight was delayed, which wasn’t a problem, when we did arrive we were welcomed and told to treat the house as our own.

Our room was comfortable, a really nice bed and modern bathroom, I can imagine the bathroom could be a bit tight if you are larger but for us it was absolutely fine.

We were given a hand-drawn map of Galway with great recommendations, including a local bar that played traditional music, we would not have gone to this bar without the recommendation but we were glad we did.

Breakfast was superb, a choice of fresh cereals, nuts and seeds and fruit, amazing freshly home baked bread as well as a cooked Irish breakfast or veggie breakfast or even French toast with cinnamon and honey, which was absolutely delicious! There was freshly made coffee, pot’s of tea and fresh orange juice.

We asked for tips when driving out to Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher and Russell told us certain roads to take that the tours did not; again we would not have done this without his advice! After a full day out exploring, coming back to freshly baked cookies was great.

Over breakfast I heard a solo traveller ask Russell for directions of where to pick up the tour bus; Russell called the tour company and arranged for them to pick her up from outside the B&B as it was raining! This kind of help goes beyond normal service to me, it shows what genuinely nice and helpful people, and hosts, Russell and Emer are, there wasn’t anything that was too much trouble.

The B&B is less than 10 minutes walk to the ‘city’ centre, and if you walk on the road behind the B&B you find some bars and shops after just a few minutes. In the other direction you can easily walk along the promenade.

Overall I would recommend Kilcullen House to anyone, there is a great laid back vibe to the whole house, from the quirky art-work, to the chilled low key music over breakfast, to the home-baked bread and cookies. If I am in Galway again then I will definitely be staying at Kilcullen House!

Room Tip: Our room (number 5) was ideal for a young couple.
