We stayed here in late October.

Whilst the hotel was fine, one did wonder how on earth it achieved 5 star status.

The location of this hotel is awful. To the back there is a horrible grey shopping/business park and to the front a very busy main road, which is difficult to cross as there are no proper crossings and the walk into Galway city seems much further than the 0.9km quoted.

While the staff were helpful, they should be at these prices, the whole ambience was one of being very pleased with themselves - in other words smug. Professional, but not warm.

In its website the G goes on an on about Philip Treacy and the hotel design, but when you get the swirly carpet shown in its photos is only 1 small rug, which looks like it has seen better days.

The G, is definitely new Ireland - i.e. Ryanair Ireland - if it moves put a price on it; a constant sales pitch and 30 Euro for access to its facilities is a bit cheeky.

Also, I didn't want or need to know I could buy the umbrella, the dressing gown or the laundry bag. The small laundry bag (at 49 Euro) looked like something my sister made in home economics when she was 14.

Next time in Galway I will be staying somewhere else.

On a positive note the breakfast was good, but then it was 25 Euro - a bit steep?.

The g hotel is situated just at Joyce Roundabout and it is a 15 minute leisurely walk to Eyre Square.

Check in for 5 of us was a little irritating, Sign the printout, then initial the nightly rate, then each person had to sign the room card envelope in case we charged anything. That’s fine, but although we did charge 3 items to the room we were never asked for the signed card as proof. Silly. The valet parking is a nice touch, and parking in the underground car park is complimentary.

However once the administration was out of the way we got to our rooms.
The accommodation corridors are very elegant but they are a little dark and very low lighting does not help navigation. I feel they should increase the light levels here just a tad. Our room overlooking the nearby business park was very nice, stylish, not huge but had everything we needed except Tea/Coffee making facilities which I think are pretty standard now even in the lowliest 2 star B&B.

Some annoyances that should not be found in a 5* hotel were: A number of human hairs and food crumbs in the Hotel Directory services booklet. The bath plug was defective and only opened very slightly. It took a long time to drain. To shut the bathroom door, it had to be slammed.

We had booked a second room for three people and it was substantial and well appointed. There are nice touches in both rooms, bathrobes, large bath towels, and lots of little personal accessories to keep one amused. Not to mention the complimentary Iced lemon cakes in the evening which were delicious. A nice treat.

The public areas on the ground floor are superbly designed and while the décor might not be to everyones taste I must say it was to mine. The design is very different, colourful and engaging. Lots of talking points there and I would have liked to explore a little more.

There is a very decent business centre there with an internet PC and it also has all the other office equipment you might need. Access to the internet PC here is complimentary it’s just a pity there is only one.

The staff are all very pleasant, the service gentle and staff appear to be extremely proud of their hotel.

After dinner (not eaten at the hotel) we relaxed in the cocktail bar with 5 cocktails at €57. Expensive, yes, but it was a special treat and we enjoyed the experience very much. The service there was certainly 5 star.

The bed was fabulously comfortable and wow – those pillows, I think they were manufactured at the cumulus cloud factory! We enjoyed a most relaxing sleep.

Next morning we ate freshly baked scones and drank hot chocolate in the lounge, it was very good and described as “savage” by the younger ones with us. “Savage” in their lingo of course meaning exemplary!

12pm is check out time and when we did this it was efficient and polite.

Finally, we had a small problem when there but once explained to the manager it was dealt with in a 5 star professional manner.

Going downhill

I've written a review of the G before, and have been back three times since, and I have to say that it's gone downhill the last time. I think there must be a new super-experienced management team bringing it crashing back down to ordinariness.

Firstly breakfast. It used to be lovely, nice room, food served to you on pretty embellished ware... now it's a zoo. It's special offer land... and bawling children must be free. Queue for your food, stainless steel vats of sweaty sausages, children screaming. Nightmare. As far removed from the original experience as possible. Even the gold edging from the plates is scratched off from the industrial dish washers.

The spa. The previous policy in the spa was a maximum of 8 people at one time. There doesn't seem to be any such limit any more as long as you're willing to pay. It's actually crowded. Relaxing, hardly. Frustrating... I'm afraid so.

The cupcakes are still there... the daily complimentary newspaper, gone.

Valet parking... yes, but be prepared to wait for it.

And the decor is aging. It's getting grimy, the corridors have a funny smell, and the white room is destroyed with stains.

The staff to guest ratio is much reduced, and this is exactly what I like and expect in a five star place. Heck, I would have even paid more for it.

I won't be back, and my friends won't be back.

We had a very pleasant stay over the weekend, of 17th-19th Oct. We brought our 14 month old daugher with us and even though the hotel did not feel like a 'family' hotel. We were made feel very welcome. Very helpful, pleasant and friendly reception staff on arrival and it carried through all the various departments waiting staff, housekeeping staff etc.Breakfast was a very nice buffet style affair with the usual Irish Breakfast but also included a continental one, ham, cheeses, fruits and pastries. I would certainly
recommend the G hotel to family and friends and look forward to staying there again.

We treated ourselves to a week-end at the G for our anniversary. First impression is that it does not look like a 5 star hotel from the front - hotel is in a retail park, but we were impressed by the valet service and check in staff were very pleasant. You will either love or hate the decor. Personally, I didn't like the poorly lit, and very darkly decorated corridors or the pink lounge - which was extremely hard on the eyes. I did love the other lounges which were very opulently decorated and fresh flower arrangements at the hotel were beautiful. Service at the bar was painfully slow, we waited about 10 minutes to be served our drink. My Husband used the gents before we went to town, there were no paper hand towels left and the bins were over-flowing, which he reported to reception. On returning that evening, we decided to have a night-cap and my Husband used the gents again, only to find no hand towels again. He told people at reception again, not what you would expect from a 5 star hotel. In general, we felt service was either all or nothing. Staff could not be more helpful at reception, but at breakfast we asked for white pudding, which we were told would be brought over to us and it wasn't. On the plus side rooms were lovely and I have to agree the beds are the most comfortable I have ever slept in. On the whole not good value for money and totally over-rated.
