Though the service felt 5-star, I am afraid that the rest of the hotel felt more style over substance in many respects.
The design of the hotel (in a warehouse on a retail park 5 mins cab ride from town) is obviously a talking point, but not to everyone's tastes - if you are put off by bubblegum pink in the morning, this place isn't going to be for you.
It was VERY busy at night, as the bars are obviously a destination for non-hotel guests. Not very pleasant for a quiet drink, though good if you like a clubby atmosphere.
The rooms were perfectly pleasant, well designed and a brighter antidote to the very dark corridors. The rooms aren't particularly large, but the beds were super comfy.
Concierge were great at providing hair straightners and irons on request. Unfortunately though, concierge suggested a really very duff restaurant. I explained that we were looking for a Modern Irish restaurant, and that we were really into food. We were sent to a below average awful place that served mixed-med dishes (mostly involving uncooked cream) - perhaps the restaurant used to be nice, but I was very suprised that concierge in a five-star hotel would suggest somewhere so far below par.
The spa is WONDERFUL. By far and away one of the best hotel spas I have ever been to. Shame that guests are therefore charged 30euros to use it. And I wasn't told about this until I was leaving.
The food at breakfast was OK, but most guests are seated in a different room to the food, and the room was cramped and very busy. We were placed in the Middle of the room, and I felt that I was on a conveyor belt - not what I would expect from a five-star hotel.
Overall, it felt that the hotel comes first and the guest comes second at the G - staff hoovering the main rooms of the hotel during the main breakfast time, the maitre'd virtually barging me into the breakfast bar as he marched guests through into the restaurant, the snooty response that guests don't usually use the gym when we asked where it was (no signs), the charging for the spa and the conveyor belt breakfast all niggled and slightly ruined our stay. I normally enjoy boutique hotels but this was not a relaxing experience unfortunately.
