“Best Bed & Breakfast & best hosts!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

What a wonderful B&B and Frank & Joan were the perfect hosts. They made us feel right at home as soon as we walked in the door. The rooms were very comfy, very clean with all the necessary amenities. We were served a 5 star breakfast in a beautifully decorated breakfast room. And Joan's Scones are a must! It's location also makes for a short walk to Eyre Square and many restaurants, pubs, & shopping. It is no wonder why this B&B is rated #1. We would stay here again and would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Galway.

Spent 2 nights here with wife, brother and sister-in-law, based on recommendation in Rick Steves' guide as well as Tripadvisor. One of the best places we stayed in a two week trip in Ireland and England. Very clean room with private bath; plenty of closet space, dresser drawers and seating in the room. Great breakfast; Frank and Joan could not have done more for us.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the rear of the house.

Stayed here two nights and was totally in agreement with their #1 rating for Galway. Frank and Joan are wonderfully gracious and helpful hosts. The breakfast is excellent and the entire place is immaculately clean. We would search them out again the next time we stay in Galway.

After the long and winding roads of county Clare, and the cliffs of Moher we made our way to Galway and were hoping to find a warm, comfy bed. We were not disappointed. Frank was very welcoming and put us all at ease right away.

After a bit of relaxation in our spacious rooms we headed out to the town centre. This is only a 10 minute walk away. This is actually very important that it's not in the heart of the old quarter as it gets very noisy down there. Therefore, with Petra house you get the best of both worlds, a quiet, very comfortable stay, yet you are just a stone's throw away from the lively heart of Galway.

I can't stress how clean everything is and also how AMAZING the breakfast is. It was definitely the best breakfast I've had in a long time. You also have a lot of choice, be it bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon, or eggs (however you like them), with bacon, sausage and hash browns. There are also lovely healthier options too. Make sure you try Joan's homemade scones! Out of this world!

I love Galway, so next time I come back I'm staying with Frank and Joan, if they have room that is!

Room Tip: We stayed in number 9 which has two double beds and a single, it was very comfortable. Our friends w...

Whenever there are so many positive reviews for a hotel or bed and breakfast, we tend to wonder whether they are all true. Our three-day stay at Petra House last week proves that they are in this case.

Petra House is not more than a 10-minute walk from the town square, bus and train station, which is very convenient. It is also a little out of the way, which means you do not need to deal with the noise of the city (which is not very big). Upon arriving, we were greeted by Frank, whose calm demeanor immediately put us at ease. Frank gave us a choice of two rooms, so we opted for what he called "the penthouse" on the third floor. It was airy, light and immaculately clean. Even though it was facing the road, it was not that noisy. (We live in a city, so we are used to noise.) We also realized that we left our adapter in another hotel, so Frank offered us three adapters left behind by other travelers. (Frank -- we realized after leaving that we took all of the adapters with us. I thought we had left two of them in the room. I accidentally put them in my bag. My apologies!)

The breakfast is perhaps the highlight of this B&B. There are many choices, and you can mix and match from the menu. The smoked salmon is wonderful --- filled with flavor and not too salty.

Frank also offered insight about ferry service to Inisheer and bus tours to the Cliffs of Moher, since we did not have a car.

Overall, this was a five-star experience. If we ever return to Galway, we will certainly return to Petra House.

Hosts Joan & Frank Maher are super helpful with tips on what is going on in town and where to go. Their beds are super comfortable (having a bad back this is a very pleasant find), the room airy and open, tea and coffee in room as well as a private bathroom. Super clean and very nice linens and towels. Best of all was their breakfast, everything from the full Irish Breakfast (too much food for us) to my breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, and granola. Fresh bread, white and farm with jam. Joan's scones were fabulous and she gives out the recipe. YUM! Highly recommended. If you are a greyhound racing fan the track is close enough to walk.

...that describes how lucky we were. First, we have no idea where in town Petra house is, and then we drive right by it. And within 30 minutes we find ourselves in the thick of the main shopping and dining area, an eight minute walk.
And the next morning, we had the best best of breakfasts, plentiful and made with the best ingredients (eg, wild salmon). And though i eat irish oatmeal every morning at home, ironically it has not appeared on any B&B breakfast menu...until now. And our gracious, soft-spoken host Frank, suggested we try it with Bailey's, a sinful, but delicious touch.
The house was charmingly appointed and the rooms, bright and comfortable. Highly, highly recommended. Thanks Frank!
