There are two St. Jude’s in Galway. The one we stayed at was St. Jude’s B&B at 110 Lower Salthill road, in Salthill, a suburb of Galway. It would have been hard to find, but for the fine directions given by the proprietors. St. Jude’s was built in 1920, a beautiful old house built in a manor house style. Large formal dining room. Very large rooms.
It’s run by Ita and Tony Johnstone. They started St. Jude’s 10 years ago when their three children were grown and Ita (pronounced Eeta) retired from nursing. Tony still works as a computer I.T. Their daughter, Sinéad, a graduate of Ballymaloe (pronounced Bally-malloo) cookery school, is chef. With 8 rooms, 4 in the original house, and 4 in an extension built in 1996, plus a small staff, it feels more like a small hotel than a family-run B&B – very professional.
Our party of six took three of the 8 rooms, all of which were impeccably maintained. Rooms 7 and 8 are at the back of the house in the new extension overlooking a rear courtyard. Very quiet. Room 7 had a double bed and twin bed. Room 8 had two twins and a double. Room 1, overlooking the front garden, was elegantly decorated with antiques and a quilted bedspread on the double bed. Perfectly gorgeous window treatment --- heavy curtains, sheer curtains and roll-down shade. The only problem with the front of the house rooms (rooms 1 and 2) is the sound of traffic along Lower Salthill. This would normally not be a problem, as the windows are double-paned, and when the windows are shut and the blackout curtains drawn, the room is very quiet. However, we arrived during an unusual heat wave, so we had to sleep with the windows open, which let the traffic noise through.
I specifically booked this B&B to take advantage of Sinéad’s cooking for my son’s 25th birthday dinner, and we weren’t disappointed. She served salmon in filo, roasted chicken (for those who didn’t want salmon), and an upside down plum torte. The breakfasts were also excellent.
You can take a bus from right in front of St. Jude’s that will get you into the city in 5 minutes. It’s also just a few minutes walk down to the promenade along Salthill’s beaches, where we went swimming on a hot summer’s day in June.
