My husband and I (early 30s) stayed in a tiny private ensuite room at this hostel in May 2009. We really liked the location of the hostel - right in the heart of the pedestrian walkway that runs through the main part of town. It is surrounded by restaurants and bars and the area is lively. We also enjoyed the kitchen and internet on site. However, when we arrived in our room, it reaked of bleach....clearly they had cleaned something, but we weren't sure what. We didn't feel comfortable taking our shoes off to walk around the floor and we passed on the morning shower because the shower and the bathroom were one in the same. We also found the bed to be really uncomfortable. Maybe we have reached a point where we are too old for hostels, but we've stayed in some more acceptable hostels in the past few years. That said, it could have been much worse, and we made due.

The staff we're pleasant apart from 1 female receptionist who needs a lesson in customer service. Ignorant, unpleasant and negative are just a few words to describe her.

The accommodation was as expected, however bed sheets were stained, the shower was disgusting and the room temperatures are a disaster.

We got woke on our second morning at 7.30am to the sound of the fire alarm. There was no fire of course, however when staying on the top floor of the building it would have been reassuring to be told it was a false alarm because there is no fire escape. The bell continued to ring a number of times, and again no staff to confirm what the problem was.?

The only positive is that its centrally located however I wouldn't recommend this place to a anybody. I will never be back!

I stayed the at the Barnacles Quay Street House for two nights in September and really enjoyed my stay there. The staff were excellent. They helped me organize my sightseeing and set me up with a nice night out for my birthday.

The rooms were standard. I was sharing a room with 15 other people and had no issues with noise. There was a man who talked a bit in his sleep but that was more funny that it was annoying. Everything is what we make it right.

There was never a wait to use the internet. All in all a great place to stay on a budget.

I would recommend this place to anyone staying in Galway.

No parking within 3 streets so you've to carry your bags.
Booked a double room-the most expensive hostel we stayed in in all of Ireland-bed was awful-the mattress was like old car springs in a cotton sack, and the base was no better. The bathroom was adequate. The building is old and a rabbit warren, and noisy when everyone comes back from the pub, and then argues in the hallways. I shan't be going back there, nor recommending it to anyone.

Stayed here in January. We had read in Let's Go that Barnacles was in a fantastic location and was great value so despite not having stayed in hostels for many years we decided to give it a try. The location is unbeatable-right in the centre of the pedestrian area. We were given a great little room with our own bathroom and a window overlooking the street. Reception staff were very upbeat and used to dealing with visitors. The rate included breakfast and 10 minutes free internet. We also had our laundry done overnight and it was only about 9 Euros for a very large bag. we sampled many of the local pubs and the Quays across from the hostel was one of the best. Also very close to Claddah. The breakfast was fairly basic-really only toast, tea and coffee. But overall this is a very efficient, very cheap quality hostel in a central location. We loved this place so much we took advantage of the 10% discount and booked Dublin Barnacles in advance.

  • Liked — Location in the heart of Galway pedestrian mall among the pubs !
  • Disliked — basic breakfast
