We “The Courtyard Café” for dinner recently in Letterfrack. First of all, do not be put off by the location or the décor of this restaurant. It acts as a cafeteria during the day for students attending Galway and Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) Letterfrack, where it is located. The menu is very ambitious and imaginative with such dishes such as braised beef cheek (wonderful) and grilled panagsius. It is by far the best menu in the area. The names are equally imaginative: “The cheeky cow” (braised beef cheek in a rosemary scented gravy); “the red hot quick one” (red snapper); “the Italian job” (meatballs of beef and pork in a rich tomato sauce). I had rabbit stuffed with garlic in a pepper sauce, which was the special for the night while my wife had “the cheeky cow”. Both dishes were wonderfully tasty and very well presented. The portions were very generous. I had the seafood chowder to start with, which is one of the best I have ever tasted, while my wife had breaded camembert which was delicious. The waiter was very friendly and helpful while the chef is very talented. Dinner is very reasonably priced. With two starters, two main courses and two glasses of wine the bill came to 48€ which we considered to be very reasonable for the quality of the food.
I cannot recommend this restaurant strongly enough! It was the best food we ate during our holiday in Connemara. If you miss the opportunity to eat here, you are missing a real (and well hidden) gem. Once again, go for the food not the décor. There is a map on Facebook as to its location but it’s easy to find.
