“Perfect- every time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

We stayed at the Prairie Townhouse and did not at first think about checking out the wine bar downstairs until, after dining in town, we came back quite early and I stopped off for a nightcap and to check emails (the wifi signal in the guest house was terrible). The Spanish Tempranillo I ordered was so good, and the complementary plate of olives so tasty that I resolved to return next day for dinner. In short, my partner and I had 2 dinners and one lunch after that and everything was fabulous. The Gambas (with chorizo) are spicy and filling, and with a side salad (beautifully presented and with many leaf varieties and other vegetables) and some homemade bread, make a perfect meal. We tried the beef cheeks (tender and flavoursome, although the cauliflower puree could have been a bit more generous), the Black Cat pasta (on the recommendation of one of the friendly staff)- superb black spaghetti with fresh seafood, chilli, spinach and a creamy wine sauce- very, very filling and satisfying. Our final lunch- a superb mushroom and tarragon soup with homemade seeded soda bread, and a crispy calamari sandwich on ciabatta with harissa (yum!) were just perfect. Everything is beautifully presented, comes out quickly, the prices are reasonable and the staff wonderful. In short, I think this is one of the best places I have ever eaten for consistency, service and value. Located in a rather downmarket bit of Salthill, but very popular with locals and should be on everyone's map of Galway! On our first night we ate in town for a much higher price, and it was OK but Black Cat is better all round! Definitely not your bog standard meat and potatoes, but a refreshing take on Mediterranean cuisine using fresh, local produce.

“tucked under a small hotel in Salthill”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

Firstly, Salthill (apart from the Board walk area) is not particularly pretty It consists of a good number of pubs, some cheap eats, coffee shops and a few shops. Black Cat is tucked in next to a part of an old bank and not too far from an arcade. It is a hotel (small) and below a combo wine bar and restaurant. What sets this apart is two things; firstly it is a place you can go in the area with a nice interior (not pub) and have a good wine list and some good choices for beer. Secondly, the food is really very, very good. Everything we had the last time we were there was excellent--quite a bit of a step up from anything else in that end of town but even, if pressed, I would say much better than a lot of in town restaurants. there is a very small bar area and a small dining area so if you are coming on a weekend in the summer, I would suggest booking...

“not for the ordinary joe soap”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2014

nice food but if you want your potatoes and your traditional dinners and portions this isnt the place for you. Staff are friendly and helpful, the wine is very nice and well chilled and the rooms are lovely and snug would return but more for the wine and setting rather than for the food ..... but i must say it was tasty

“Consistently Good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2014

One of THE most important things for me in a restaurant is consistency, and i would say it is the biggest failing for most places. Well black cat has been consistently really good for me since it opened and consistently good value. The calamari are always excellent, the soup and gourmet sandwich combo during the day is definitely one of the best in the west. The gambas are lovely but my favourite is the baby potatoes with spinach and spanish ham. Oops nearly forgot the sweet potato chips, really good. All the wines are well chosen and my favourite is the californian pinot noir called ?? Lake. Cant remember but you will find it if you look on wine list.
If u like a nice 2 piece jazz acoustic combo playing, check out which nights if you are booking, I think Sunday and maybe one or two other nights.
