“Disappointing!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

Went for lunch one Saturday on the recommendation of friends. When we went to order we were told that the tapas menu didn't start for another hour - this wasn't clear on the menu or the website which we'd checked out before visiting.
Ordered a 'Mediterranean' plate, and the risotto of the day (smoked chicken). The plate was a standard selection of chorizo, cheeses, olives, tasty tapenade, and some awful hummus (no garlic / lemon or any other seasoning evident). Some salad or roasted vegetables would have lifted this dish hugely. The risotto was a reasonable portion, but again lacked flavour, was really glue like and stodgy in consistency and the rice was underdone. We went a few doors up for coffee & dessert.
Hopefully my experience was a one-off. The many positive reviews certainly give that impression. A

“Great Tapa & Wine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

We were in Galway for the weekend & we came across this wonderful little tapas & wine bar. We had an long relaxing lunch working our way through the menu. We started with a selection of the crostini, the goats cheese, fig & apple was a great combination. We also had a scallops, black pudding, smoked bacon & sweet potato puree - delicious. The goats cheese wrapped in filo pastry with a beetroot puree & candied walnuts was to die for. Of course we washed it down with a few glass of wine. We finished off the meal with a couple of ports & a vanilla creme brulee with fantastic homemade biscotti. Great value the bill came to €70. Cant wait to go back again.

“My favorite restaurant in Galway at the moment.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012

Gorgeous food and reliable so. Have been going for the last year. Nice atmosphere. really friendly staff. Cannot fault this place. The prices are middle of the road, but the food is top notch. The platter for two is great value. The chick pea stew well worth trying as is the black seafood pasta with black spaghetti. Enjoy!

“Great live jazz and atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

We came to the Black Cat because me and my wife were staying at the Prairie House hotel which is located above the restaurant and it looked like a cozy place to relax. We made reservations since we were told that it gets busy during the live music and i'm glad we did because the restaurant is very small and the room were the band plays has only two tables and a bar with 3 stools so several people came in but had to leave due to the limited seating.

The atmosphere is very relaxing and it was great to take a break from the loud, cramped pubs. The food is also good albeit on the expensive side, but the great wine sure makes up for that. The service was prompt and friendly and the manager even offered a glass of wine for us on the house as a friendly gesture. What was nice was that we were able to try a variety of wines before picking out one that we liked and the staff was more then helpful in finding a great bottle to our preferred taste.

“Friendly and Relaxing.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2012

This is a newish eating place in Salthill, beautifully restored house. Its the staff that make it a very pleasant experience, nothing is too much for them. It is our local for food or just a glass of wine. Delicious and unusual Tapas dishes freshly prepared, Calamari to die for and a great selection of wines. Prices are keen also.
