I stayed here during the third week of July 2005. It's a lovely hotel, in a great location, and I'd heard wonderful things. My stay was pleasant, but a little disappointing in places and it could so easily have been almost perfect.
The hotel needs to buck up a little and focus on some smoothing off of some rough quality issues.
Example: upon arrival the first room I was offered was shoddy and there numerous stains and marks on the carpet. In short it was dirty and tired. I don't expect to see this kind of room in such a first class hotel and one that is only a few years old. Frankly, there's no excuse for it.
That room was also on a side of the hotel that was next door to some large scale construction work which is ongoing beside the hotel and obviously will be ongoing for some continued length of time.
I asked reception to move me to a room on the other side of the hotel and admittedly while the room was better, it was actually closer to the construction work. I asked to be changed to a different room again. (At this stage it starts to get embarrassing for both the guest and the staff.)
Finally, I get sent to another room which is not too far away from the construction wprk but a little better and the roomer is nicer. I'd specifically told the staff that I was there on business and would be staying in my room for extended periods of time and working in the room and thus didn't want to be annoyed by the construction. Notwithstanding this, the room they put me was on the first floor (not ground) and right above a nightclub. You could imagine how delighted I was when the nightclub cranked up the volume at about 9.00pm for two nights in a row and I couldn't get back over to sleep until the ealry hours.
Then of course, like clockwork at 8.00am next morning I'm awakened by the dulcet tones of a pile driver and other large items of construction hardware. Not good at all.
Now the hotel was full and so they couldn't do very much to improve the situation but I was staying there on company business and my company sends a LOT of people to that hotel and is a major employer in the area and a major customer of the hotel. I had naively assumed they might pull out some stops to make things better. But alas, nothing.
Then there was the bar/restaurant. I sat down one evening for a drink and some bar food. The bar area was only half full, but almost all of the free tables had glasses and plates left on them that hadn't been cleared away and various members of staff walked straight past my dirty table (with no apparent intention to do anything else) on three occasions before I had to frantically draw their attention to the fact that I was there. After my drink was delivered, there was at least a 15 minute delay AFTER I closed and replaced my menu before anyone came to take my order. Having said that the food was lovely and very reasonably priced.
Otherwise, the hotel is great, the staff seem keen enough to help, but the hotel really does need to raise the bar a little in order to meet the levels of quality that they purport to offer.
