Soon after it opened I stayed here any time I was in Galway, however it is a few years since I have been in Galway so on our trip there recently we booked in there for 3 nights. While the Reception staff were friendly and professional I felt the the hotel was becoming shabby - bedroom furnishings showing their age and indeed the tables in the lobby too. Each day we had to request a second large bath towel as we were only given one for the two of us. All around there were signs of the standard dropping, little things in themselves but all adding up.
I spent a morning in the Spa and really enjoyed that, the Thermal Suite was unusual and most relaxing and I had an excellent back massage.
The position of the hotel is very good as are its views over Galway Bay.

  • Liked — Good size room
  • Disliked — Shabby furniture and lack of second bath large towel

Losing some of its edge?

Is this hotel which seemed so state-of-the-art when it opened a few years ago losing some of its edge? Somehow the old irritants which were always there seemed more annoying on a recent visit. One spends a long time waiting for one of the two lifts, and the singer in the bar is as loud as ever. On the "executive" top floor, there were signs that things were fraying: the French door on to the balcony could not be latched open, breakfast in bed was dull and the coffee on the cold side, and the bottle of sparkling wine in the executive lounge was nearly empty on our first day and was still there unchanged on our third day with the spoon still sticking out of it. Somehow, the hotel seems to have taken on a slightly dull "conference" feel, and may be losing its place as many people's hotel of first choice in Galway.

  • Liked — Large comfortable bedroom on 5th floor, with balcony.

The Radisson stepped up to the plate when I arrived in Galway to find that the hotel I had booked had closed down in the meantimey. They even honoured the original rate.

Plenty of other plus points come to mind. My room was a bit on the small side, but was clean and comfortable. Facilities such as the bar and other public areas were attractive and modern. Reception and housekeeping staff were courteous and efficient, as were the bar staff.

Unfortunately, some minuses also need to be mentioned. The restaurant is badly organised and the staff there brusque. The layout is baffling too, so that it is far too easy to end up in someone else's meeting room!

The location is excellent with good access to local roads, the train station, and the city centre. This being the case, one can overlook the very unattractive area in front of the hotel - nothing more than a yard for coaches from all over Ireland and the UK.

Modern splendour, bad service

Radisson is one of my favoured brands. This is a modern hotel with an impressive lobby and entrance atrium, tall indoor trees and glass elevators. The outlook is over Lough Atalia, an inlet of Galway Bay and the incoming railway line (but also what seems to be a local oil depot - that can't be helped). The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming but sadly the service was poor. Service was bad at dinner the first evening and the food average,so much so that I cancelled a reservation for the following evening. I booked a room on the Level 5 executive floor which was a magnificent and very comfortable room (although, in that standard of hotel, it was off-putting to discover the previous occupants' toiletries still in the shower cubicle: it made me wonder what else had not been cleaned or tidied up), The Executive Lounge facilities were poor and not worth the considerable additional cost. Newspapers I ordered did not appear on the second morning until I asked twice for them to be delivered. The continental breakfast in the executive lounge is very limited compared with the similar product I have encountered in other hotels, and on the second morning (as with the newspapers) there were no plates or cutlery. The response to my contact to the reception was 'we have a big group in.' Having said all that the hotel is conveniently located near the railway, the bus, the main square and main shopping street. On balance I would probably give it another chance.

I stayed here with a small group of work colleagues for a weekend at the end of November for a Christmas party.
The staff were courteous and helpful at all times which was great as it was a busy weekend for the hotel it seemed.
Our hotel rooms were large and clean but the décor could do with a bit of updating. I stayed in a twin room and the beds were a lovely size and quite comfortable. Breakfast was large and very nice and the location was a short walk away from Eyre Square.
I would consider staying here again but I think they need to re-think their prices. I have stayed in nicer hotels for less money and I think the price tag is attached to the Radisson name more than anything.
