My wife and I stayed here for one night as part of a coach tour and, even though it was one of the more expensive tours, we did not have high expectation of our accommodation. Even so this was a disappointing experience.
Firstly Galway itself is grand, with great pubs, town square, beautiful scenery and of course the bay.
The location of the hotel is not good, being right on the outskirts of town and beyond reasonable walking distance, even for seasoned walkers like us. There isn't even a decent pub nearby. The room was small and basic, but clean. But no bar fridge! We always like to have a drink or two in our room at the end of the day before going out, and there is a nearby off-licence, but we had no way of keeping the drinks cold. We found that four star hotels and above in Ireland tended to have fridges, but not others, which we found perplexing.
The real problems came with bedtime. The smallish bed was bearable, but not the incessant dripping sound in the wall, probably part of the radiator heating system. Just as bad was when we arose. We had a 6.30am wake up call so the coach could get off early. Now we like to get up earlier than necessary to have a walk before breakfast. The only problem - no hot water for a shower. The water heater was obviously set to start at 6am or so, and eventually we did get warm and later hot water, but not at a time that suited us.
Breakfast was also average.
We are not fussy travellers. We were away from home for seven weeks and stayed in many hotels in a number of countries and tend to put up with little glitches. Nevertheless we did expect better from a hotel with this star rating.
