Myself and my Wife just returned from a three night stay in the Galway Bay Hotel in Salthill, County Galway. The Hotel is one of contrasts, With many positives that just outway the negatives,
Firstly we booked the hotel trough the hotel web site and booked a midweek special break which consisted of three night B&B and two dinners for 360euro which was excellent value. The rooms are a decent size and the bed was perhaps the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The hotel must be commended for it's food served in the Lobster Pot Restaurant, We were on a set four course menu and the selection of dishes were super and varied each day from kangaroo to beef to the excellent local fish, and for a supplement of 16euro for lobster termidor, all fantastic. The bar in the hotel was a proper Irish pub warm and inviting, like the staff all through the hotel were super friendly and efficient really helpful and could not be faulted..
Now to the negatives the leisure center / swimming pool are tiny and are very uninviting, the pool though clean is very drab. Similar story with the Lobster Pot Restaurant drab and unimaginative a huge cold room with no character, It really is a shame about these two areas as the remainder of the hotel looks and feels very much like a 4/5 star hotel.
Salthill like a previous reviewer commented has seen better days but the Bay more than makes up for the tacky arcades that have sprung up.
Galway City itself is about a twenty minute walk from the hotel and is a energetic and bustling plave to shop, drink and dine,(taxi fare from the hotel is about 7/8 euro and reception will happily call a cab.)
