I booked one night here to break a long journey as the hotel i had been hoping to use was fully booked. I was travelling with my 2 year old daughter so i booked us a double room with breakfast, thinking that for such a cheap price I dont mind sharing a bed with a toddler. I was fully aware that we would be using student accommodation, and was by no means expecting a 5 star hotel.....
However, when we eventually found the place it was clear that there were going to be a few problems. I parked the car at the reception area and went inside with my daughter. It appears that the staff are very new and very inexperienced. The most senior girl on the desk had to hand-write me a receipt as she didnt know how to print one. While i was stood there, one unfortunate man had to come back twice as he had been given the wrong room key. Both times there had been someone already in the room when he got there and he had just walked in on them. Two young boys asked one of the girls on the desk for a room key as they had lost theirs. She gave them one without question, and they returned 5 minutes later to say they had given her the wrong room number. The girl had just handed out a room key to somebody else's room!
I was hardly surprised then to find that we too had been given the wrong key, and was quite annoyed to have to go back and get another one. While the girls were polite and friendly enough, they did not seem at all bothered by the number of mistakes that were being made and offered no apology.
The accommodation itsself was basic, functional, and pretty bare. Although it was clean there was a stale smell and the paintwork was tired and faded. Everything in the room was shades of grey, and i felt pretty sorry for the student who had been living here in there depressing surroundings all term.
The thing that annoyed me the most was the rattling at our door handle at about 1130 pm, a female member of staff calling out "security, hello, who is in here?" !!! I could not believe that any staff member would consider it a decent level of service to do that to a paying guest at that time of night. In fact, I was absolutely furious that a staff member would put me in the position where i would have to answer the door in my nightdress to explain what i was doing there. I felt that when I paid for the room I was paying the right to have our own secure, private space for the night, but after that my trust in the security of this "hotel" was gone. It was very hard to get back to sleep after that, and i set my alarm early so we could get out of there.
Breakfast was very much "first up, best fed," with cereal toast and juice on offer. Unlike the reception, staff here were very efficient and kept the tables clean and clear for the steady stream of guests.
I will not be staying here again, I would prefer to pay the little bit extra and know that I will not be woken in the night like that. The staff just didnt seem that proffesional to me, I would have expected more than that.
